2020 Senior Bowl: Winners, losers from Day 1 practices

Chargers Wire’s Gavino Borquez lays out his winners and losers from Day 1 of the 2020 Reese’s Senior Bowl.

The 2020 Senior Bowl kicked off on Tuesday with the North and South teams starting their first day of practices.

Which players impressed? Which players disappointed?

Here are my picks for the the biggest winners and losers from Tuesday’s on-field action:

Winner – Javon Kinlaw | DT | South Carolina

Labeled as a projected top-20 going into the week, there was only so much to gain for Kinlaw. Many were wondering why he decided to still play this week despite being slotted to go high in the upcoming draft, and he said that he wanted to just come out and compete in his presser on Monday night.

Compete might be an understatement to describe Kinlaw’s showing on Tuesday afternoon, as he dominated some of the top interior offensive linemen. He used his power, length and explosive quickness to get into the backfield on every single.

Clemson defensive weapon Isaiah Simmons declares for 2020 NFL draft

Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons is leaving school early to enter the 2020 NFL draft

One of the most versatile and dynamic defenders in all of college football is making the early jump to the pro ranks.

Clemson’s Isaiah Simmons is leaving school early to enter the 2020 NFL draft. He made his announcement via social media Saturday.

A rare athlete, Simmons has been deployed by a Tigers at nearly every position on defense, with a high level of success no matter what he’s asked to do. While some may view his skill set as a reason to question his fit at the next level, any NFL defensive coordinator worth his whistle will be able to take advantage of his playmaking ability, no matter where he lines up.

Simmons should light up the NFL Scouting Combine, and could lock himself in as a top-10 pick.

One of the best cornerbacks in college football is making the early jump to the pro ranks.

Clemson’s A.J. Terrell is leaving school early to enter the 2020 NFL draft. He made his announcement via social media Friday.

Coming off yet another trip to the College Football Playoff and the National Championship Game, Terrell helped lead one of the nation’s most talented defenses. His combination of size, length and athleticism should make him one of the first players off the board at his position. Terrell should come off the board on Day 2, at the latest, when draft weekend rolls around.

LSU TE Thaddeus Moss declares for 2020 NFL draft

Elite LSU tight end enters the draft.

LSU tight end Thaddeus Moss has decided to forgo his redshirt senior season and enter the 2020 NFL draft, he announced on Twitter.

Moss is coming off of the most prolific season for a tight end in LSU history, setting school records with 47 receptions and 570 yards, tallying 4 touchdowns in the process. The son of NFL Hall of Famer Randy Moss, the tight end will look to build momentum from his performance in the national championship, in which he caught two touchdown passes.

A riser up draft boards late in the season, Moss is an intriguing mid-round prospect who could find his way off the board some time in Day 2 if the draft process goes his way.

Clemson RB Travis Etienne returning for 2020 season

Top running back is heading back to school.

In one of the more surprising announcements to come out of the underclassmen declaration process, Clemson running back Travis Etienne has announced that he will forgo the 2020 NFL draft and return to school for his senior year.

Etienne has been one of the best backs in the nation for the past two years, having rushed for 3,272 yards and a whopping 43 touchdowns on the ground over the past two seasons, rushing for a 7.9 yards-per-carry average in the process. Coming off of a loss in the national championship to LSU, he will look to help lead Clemson to their second championship win in three years.

This move serves as a big blow to the 2020 running back class, one that has already seen a few notable names decide to return to school. Etienne joins the likes of Alabama’s Najee’ Harris, Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard and Mississippi State’s Kylin Hill as underclass running backs who have decided to forgo this year’s draft.

One of the nation’s top pass rushers is making the early jump from the college football world to the pro ranks.

LSU’s K’Lavon Chaisson is leaving school early to enter the 2020 NFL draft. He made his announcement via social media Friday.

An explosive edge defender with rare athleticism, Chaisson was a key part of a Tigers defense that helped win a national championship. His athleticism, versatility and experience against top competition should make him one of the top players off the board at his position. Don’t be surprised if he’s a first-round pick come April.

Alabama RB Najee’ Harris returning to school for 2020 season

Alabama running back Najee’ Harris is returning to school instead of entering the 2020 NFL draft

One of the best running backs in the country will be putting off the pro ranks and returning to school next year.

Alabama’s Najee’ Harris is passing on the 2020 NFL draft and will return to the Crimson Tide for the 2020 season. The announcement was made via social media in a video posted on AL.com.

One of the most highly touted recruits in the country coming out of high school, Harris patiently waited for his turn to be Alabama’s featured back behind Damien Harris, and it looks like he’s not ready to give up that role just yet. He would have likely been a Day 2 pick in the 2020 draft, but as long as he stays healthy and has another year like he had in 2019, he should still be in that range when the 2021 draft comes around.

LSU RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire declares for 2020 NFL draft

LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire is leaving school to enter the 2020 NFL draft

One of the top running backs in college football is leaving school early to jump to the pro ranks.

LSU’s Clyde Edwards-Helaire is foregoing his senior season and will declare for the 2020 NFL draft. He announced his intentions via social media Wednesday.

Fresh off a National Championship victory over Clemson in which he put up more than 150 total yards, Edwards-Helaire is a dynamic runner with an impressive combination of power and agility.

Edwards-Helaire is widely considered to be one of the top running back prospects in this year’s draft class. He should hear his name called on Day 2. Edwards-Helaire has the skill set to quickly become a key piece on an NFL offense.

The Louisiana State Tigers haven’t even had 72 hours to celebrate their 2019-2020 National Championship before the underclassmen began declaring for the 2020 NFL Draft.

Now you can add offensive tackle Saahdiq Charles to the list of Tigers making the jump this offseason. Charles made the announcement via social media Wednesday.

Charles will join Justin Jefferson, Lloyd Cushenberry III, Grant Delpit, Patrick Queen and Jacob Phillips, who have also declared. Looks like head coach Ed Oregeron will have his work cut out for him as he looks to re-tool his team following this run of declarations on top of the seniors who will also be leaving the program.

Mississippi State RB Kylin Hill returning for senior season

Mississippi State running back Kylin Hill is passing up the 2020 NFL draft and will return to the Bulldogs for his senior season

One of the SEC’s top running backs is coming back to school for another year.

Mississippi State’s Kylin Hill is passing up the 2020 NFL draft, and will return to the Bulldogs for his senior season. He made his announcement via social media Wednesday.

Listed at 5-11, 215 pounds, Hill is a tough, physical running who put up big numbers for MSU in 2019. He racked up 1,350 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground this season, and will be primed for another big campaign in 2020.

Don’t be surprised if Hill is among the top running back prospects in the 2021 NFL draft class.
