College Football Playoff Chase: Who’s Still Alive After Week 8

Who’s still alive in the chase to get into the 2020-2021 College Football Playoff?

Who’s still alive in the chase to get into the 2020-2021 College Football Playoff?

With the Big Ten and Mountain West now a part of the mix, this gets even more interesting.

As always, the ground rules for this are 1) win your Power Five championship and go unbeaten and you’re almost certainly in, or 2) finish with one loss and a Power Five championship and you’re probably in, or 3) lose one game in the SEC, Big Ten or ACC – at least this year, at the moment – the Big 12 – and as long as that’s it, you have a shot.

Everyone else? This year, probably not, so …

Finished. Done. Let’s go take a steam

Teams that haven’t played yet, but really don’t have a shot

All of these teams will be in the hunt for an automatic New Year’s Six bowl slot if one goes unbeaten, but it’ll take something historically weird to get any sort of consideration for the College Football Playoff.

MAC
Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami University, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo, Western Michigan

Mountain West
Colorado State, New Mexico

Teams that haven’t played yet, but have a chance

Some might be longer shots than others, and some might be totally unrealistic, but if any of these teams go unbeaten with a conference championship, they’re almost certainly going to be in.

Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Utah, Washington, Washington State

Finally, we get to rank the Big Ten and Mountain West rankings based on what happened on the field instead on a theoretical belief.

As always, if you have a beef or question about any of these rankings, first look at the schedule – that’s where most of the answers are. Did the team in question lose to someone ranked higher without any other variables factoring in? That’s probably why it is where it is.

Louisiana (3-1) vs UAB (4-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Louisiana running game has the potential to roll through a UAB defensive front that faced one team that can run – Miami.

The Hurricanes tore off 337 yards on the ground.

It’s a bit much to compare Levi Lewis to Miami’s D’Eriq King, but the veteran Ragin’ Cajun quarterback can move, he has the backs to take control of the tempo, and the offensive line is as good as the Blazers have seen since early September. However …

Why UAB Will Win

Louisiana can run, but UAB is better at it.

Spencer Brown was held to 22 yards by WKU, but the offense managed 217 yards on the ground for its third 200-yard day of the season. One of the others was a 190-yard performance in a win over South Alabama.

Louisiana has a fantastic offense that moves fast, strikes quickly, and plays with a tremendous pace. However, it doesn’t do much to go on long marches. UAB dominates the time of possession battle and should have the ball for close to 35 minutes. And then there’s the problem of …

What’s Going To Happen

The UAB pass rush should take over when it needs to.

The defense will give up passing yards, but no one other than King has been able to it the 50% mark over the last month on a secondary that’s limiting everyone’s attack to a whole lot of dinks and dunks.

This is a massive test for a Blazer team that has the wins, but hasn’t beaten anyone good enough to chirp about. Louisiana is used to playing in close, tight games, but UAB’s defense will come up with two big fourth quarter stops to survive.

This is like a strong mid-December bowl game. It’ll be a good one.

UTEP (3-2) vs Charlotte (1-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why UTEP Will Win

The Miners are actually playing well.

For the first time in year’s there’s actually a decent passing game to work around, and the defense is second in Conference USA in yards allowed.

It’s getting a great start to the season from the run defense that only allowed more than 100 yards to Texas. By a mile, this is the best third down D the program has enjoyed in over a decade.

Charlotte is only hitting 39% of its third down chances and hasn’t been close to consistent enough.

Why Charlotte Will Win

FINALLY the 49ers are at home. They had to take it to the road over then first three games of a strange season with pauses, postponements, and two losses in the first three games. What’s been the problem so far?

The run defense has been a mess.

UTEP was able to run on a miserable ULM defense, and that was about it. It hasn’t hit the 100-yard mark in three of the last four games.

The Charlotte passing game should be sharp early on, and it should be able to keep it going. UTEP hasn’t faced a whole slew of top passing attacks outside of the blowout loss to Texas, and now it’s going to be pushed.

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte hasn’t played the part yet, and UTEP has played out of its mind for the first part of the season. The Miners are no longer an easy out, but the 49ers will finally get a chance to enjoy the home life with its sharpest game yet.

College Football Playoff Chase: Who’s Still Alive After Week 7

Who’s still alive in the chase to get into the 2020-2021 College Football Playoff?

Who’s still alive in the chase to get into the 2020-2021 College Football Playoff?

Contact/Follow @ColFootballNews & @PeteFiutak

Starting with the unwritten rules of the College Football Playoff …

1) Win your Power Five championship and finish unbeaten, and you’re in. And yes, this will go for the Big Ten. The Pac-12 is a little iffy, though, with a six-game regular season, Go 7-0 with a conference title, and the Pac-12 will at least be on the doorstep.

2) Win your Power Five championship and finish with one loss, and in normal times you’re close to being a mortal lock. This year, the SEC champ is in with one loss no matter what, but it’s not so sure a thing across the board. This will be addressed in a moment.

3) Lose one game in the SEC, Big Ten, or this year, the ACC, with that one loss coming to a conference champion who’s off to the College Football Playoff. That’s how Alabama got in on the way to a title in 2017. Or, be dominant and have one loss that was by crazy circumstances, like Ohio State in 2016 despite losing to Penn State.

4) Win your Group of Five conference championship, go unbeaten, and pray for a whole lot of luck. We have yet to have a season with a slew of two-loss Power Five champions, but that’s what it would take for an unbeaten Group of Fiver to get in.

Teams that haven’t played yet, but really don’t have a shot

All of these teams will be in the hunt for an automatic New Year’s Six bowl slot if one goes unbeaten, but it’ll take something historically weird to get any sort of consideration for the College Football Playoff.
