Colts rookies report to training camp this week

Colts rookies will report to training camp this week.

Indianapolis Colts rookies will report to training camp this week on Saturday, July 24, a few days before the veterans arrive for the start of training camp.

Though the foundation of the roster is set thanks to some strong draft classes over the last few years, the rookie class has some potential to make an impact early.

First-round pick Kwity Paye is set to battle for a starting spot on the edge of the defensive line while some would even consider him a favorite to win the job ahead of Week 1.

The Colts will be waiting for second-round pick Dayo Odeyingbo to recover from a torn Achilles, but the long-term view on the Vandy product is extremely bright—so long as the Achilles doesn’t hamper his ability to return to form.

A sleeper in the mix may be tight end Kylen Granson, who is expected to slot right into the H-back role as the TE3 behind Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox. Granson’s abilities as a receiver should give him the opportunity to flash during training camp and hopefully carve out a role during his first season.

Other rookies to keep an eye on include safety Shawn Davis and quarterback Sam Ehlinger, both of which will be battling for a roster spot. Wide receiver Mike Strachan and offensive lineman Will Fries may have a longer way to go, but they are still intriguing in their own right as well.

Training camp is just about here, and the rookies will kick things off by reporting for camp early as they usually do.

Colts’ preseason opener vs. Panthers to air on NFL Network

The preseason opener for the Colts will air live on NFL Network.

The preseason opener for the Indianapolis Colts will air live on NFL Network when they host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, Aug. 15.

Following a pair of joint practices that week at training camp, the Colts will be one of many teams getting some live action on NFL Network in August. It’s an afternoon game set for 1:00 p.m. ET and the only game NFL Network is airing that day.

Though it’s the preseason, this matchup will be big for both sides. This will be the first time the respective teams will see their new quarterbacks work within the offenses—the Colts traded for Carson Wentz while the Panthers traded for Sam Darnold.

We don’t yet know how many snaps the Colts will be sending their starters out for during the preseason. With the 17-game schedule on tap for the first time, the league cut down the preseason to three games. Starters never played the fourth game as it was meant for those on the roster bubble to get a bit more film in case they didn’t make the cut.

The Colts are just under a week away from returning to training camp after what’s been a long offseason, and they’ll be put in the spotlight right away during the first week of the preseason.

CBS Sports: Kylen Granson ‘will make an impact early’

CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso is high on Kylen Granson making an early impact.

The Indianapolis Colts added to the offense for the first time during the 2021 NFL draft when they used a fourth-round pick on tight end Kylen Granson out of SMU.

Granson is likely a lock for a roster spot in the tight end room behind Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox, but there’s a chance he earns a role right away. Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports believes Granson can make an early impact.

TE Kylen Granson
Impressive stat to know: 78 catches for 1,257 yards with 14 touchdowns in his two seasons at SMU

Granson is old for a rookie. He’s already 23. And in most cases, older prospects who produced against younger competition in college don’t pan out in the NFL. But not every “older” rookie is doomed once they start playing on Sundays. And Granson has a new-age tight end skill set.

He’s smaller, can separate — especially underneath — and is occasionally flashy after the catch. We know Carson Wentz has an affinity for throwing to the tight end — remember Zach Ertz’s 116 catches in 2018? So even with some veterans at the position in front of him, Granson will make an impact early.

There will be a lot of mouths to feed in the Colts offense even though we are still waiting to see how the pecking order will shape out. Granson is likely to be third in the tight end room when it comes to targets, and he’ll likely be behind four wide receivers and Nyheim Hines.

That said, Granson should fill the role that Trey Burton held during the 2020 season. The Colts may use him more as an H-back as well, which means we could see Granson line up in the backfield.

Training camp arrives in a week, and Granson will certainly be a player to keep an eye on in hopes he can make an impact early.

Colts’ roster bubble: Each position’s biggest potential cut

Here is the biggest name at each position on the roster bubble for the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts are now under three weeks away from their return to training camp at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield.

With the much-needed return of training camp also comes the roster debates as numerous players are vying for the limited spots on the Colts roster. With so many positions already having foundational pieces, there is going to be some intense competition for roles and spots on the roster.

So we are going to take a look at the biggest potential roster cut at each position. Essentially, which players with the biggest name are on the bubble? Some of these may be a surprise while others not so much. For some, it may not matter whether they make it or not. But we’re here to break it down anyway.

Here’s the biggest potential roster cut at each position by the time training camp is over:

1 burning question at each position entering Colts training camp

Burning questions at each position for the Colts as training camp nears.

The Indianapolis Colts have officially entered the month of July, which means training camp will be here before the end of the month.

Currently on their summer break after revising their spring workout schedule, the Colts have high expectations for a roster that features a new quarterback in Carson Wentz.

Even outside of the new quarterback, there are questions at every position that will need to be answered throughout training camp, the preseason and then leading into the regular season with an opener against the Seattle Seahawks at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Here is one burning question at each position entering training camp:

Colts’ 2021 training camp preview: C Ryan Kelly

Ryan Kelly continues to be the anchor of the offensive line.

The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up their spring workouts at the end of May and will return for training camp sometime at the end of July to prepare for the 2021 regular season.

Before that happens, we will be going through the majority of the roster to preview their background, projected role and bottom line with the team entering training camp.

After previewing left tackle Eric Fisher and All-Pro left guard Quenton Nelson, it’s time to take a look at the anchor of the offensive line.

Colts announce return to Grand Park for training camp

The Colts will be returning to Westfield for training camp.

The Indianapolis Colts will return to the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield for training camp, the team announced Friday.

Though it was expected that the Colts were going to return to their training camp site, it hadn’t yet been announced before Friday. Now that it has, it’s official that the team will be going through a relatively normal training camp.

With the Colts returning to Westfield, this will also resume the ability for fans to be in attendance for training camp, which is one of the main reasons the team conducts their practices off-site.

There was no training camp for fans in 2020 due to COVID-19 protocols. There was barely any training camp for the players. But with vaccinations becoming more prevalent, it seems the league is opening up more and getting back to normal.

It isn’t clear what kind of protocols the Colts will have in place for training camp, but it is expected that the schedule will be announced on Tuesday.

Leading up to their preseason opener, the Colts will be hosting the Carolina Panthers for joint practices at Westfield on Aug. 12 and 13 before the game at Lucas Oil Stadium on Aug. 15.

The full schedule is expected to be released on Tuesday, but this is an encouraging step for things to get back to normal.

Colts’ 2021 training camp preview: OT Eric Fisher

Eric Fisher can be a big X-factor for the Colts.

The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up their spring workouts at the end of May and will return for training camp sometime at the end of July to prepare for the 2021 regular season.

Before that happens, we will be going through the majority of the roster to preview their background, projected role and bottom line with the team entering training camp.

Rounding out the offense is the big boys up front and we’ll start with the newest addition to the offensive line.

Colts’ 2021 training camp preview: TE Kylen Granson

Can rookie TE Kylen Granson carve out a big role in Year 1?

The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up their spring workouts at the end of May and will return for training camp sometime at the end of July to prepare for the 2021 regular season.

Before that happens, we will be going through the majority of the roster to preview their background, projected role and bottom line with the team entering training camp.

We’ve already taken a look at previewing Jack Doyle and Mo Alie-Cox. Now, it’s time to turn to an exciting rookie who joins the room.

Colts to host Panthers for joint training camp practices

Panthers will be visiting Indy this fall.

The Indianapolis Colts will host the Carolina Panthers for joint training camp practices at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield ahead of the preseason opener in August, the team announced Tuesday.

This was expected as reported by Zak Keefer of The Athletic following the 2021 draft, but it wasn’t set in stone just yet. Now that the team has announced it, the Panthers will be visiting the Colts.

Despite going 5-11 in 2020, this should be an interesting matchup for the Colts. The Panthers’ trio of receivers in D.J. Moore, Robby Anderson and rookie Terrace Marshall should provide the secondary with a stiff test right off the bat.

It isn’t clear how much work running back Christian McCaffrey will get during the two joint practices and the preseason game, but he will be the star of the show after missing most of the 2020 season due to injury.

The Panthers also traded for Sam Darnold this offseason, hoping he can be the quarterback of the future.

The Colts will be hoping to see what their new players like Carson Wentz and Kwity Paye can do against some real competition even if the looks will be vanilla for the most part.

The Colts are expected to have fans in attendance for training camp, which will help get things back to normal after a pandemic-filled 2020 season.
