NFL Draft 2020: Clemson

As amazing as Clemson has been in the College Football Playoff era, you’d think it would be a bit more consistent at pumping out the elite NFL talents.

By any normal standard, the program has been a phenomenal talent factory with three first rounders last year and four players taken in the top 40. It had five of the top 57 picks in 2016 and eight first round draft picks since 2015. Even so, it hasn’t quite been the high-end NFL Draft killer of an Ohio State or Alabama.

[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

Whatever. You don’t play for national championships every season without being loaded with elite talent. More is on the way to the League of Mercenaries this year.

But all that matters here is how many go in the first round, and the line is set at 2.5.

While that might seem a bit low for a team that just played for the national championship, remember, this is just for Round One – around seven Tigers should end up getting drafted.

LB Isaiah Simmons deserves to go in the top four, but at worst he’s a top ten pick. That’s one. And two …

CB AJ Terrell should go between 18 and 24, but that’s not a mortal lock. Don’t worry about it – he’s a first rounder. That means you need to find one more to get to the over on the 2.5.

Tee Higgins. That’s it. The fabulous wide receiver is your one shot at Clemson getting three players drafted, and he’s likely going to be drafted in the mid-40s.

So …

How Many Clemson Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

Two.

When it comes to figuring out first rounders and going with the over, in general you want to have a few options who could possibly slip in late. Strength in numbers is important, and Clemson only has Higgins as the possible option to join Simmons and Terrell in the top 32.

That’s probably not going to happen. There’s no value in it, but …

NFL Draft 2020: LSU

And here’s the problem after coming up with one of the greatest seasons in the history of college football.

The NFL is going to want your guys.

LSU hasn’t been the NFL Draft first round factory you’d think it is.

Devin White went to Tampa Bay with the fifth overall pick last year, but that was it for Day One. There weren’t any first rounders in 2018, but three were selected early in 2017.

Eight first round picks in the last ten years would be a ton for most programs, but that seems a tad light for LSU.

And this year is about to make up for it.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

Just five Tigers have gone in the first round over the last six drafts, and the over/under on this year is at 5.5.

And no, six LSU players have never been selected in the first round. Five LSU player have never been selected in the first round. The four taken in 2007 – JaMarcus Russell, LaRon Landry, Dwayne Bowe, Craig Davis (YEEEEEEEESH) – set the program’s record for players sent off to the big leagues.

At least 12 players off the 2019 national champions will have their names called over the weekend, and it could be more like 15 when it’s all done. But all that matters to the 5.5 is the first round.

This isn’t going to be easy.

Joe Burrow is obviously one, but he might be about it for the first 20 picks. The back half of the first round has to be loaded with Tigers to get to six, and it could happen.

Edge rusher K’Lavon Chaisson is a sure-thing, and LB Patrick Queen should be a lock, but that’s about it for the no doubters, and you still need three more.

Realistically, WR Justin Jefferson should go late in the first, but that’s hardly a two-foot putt. Safety Grant Delpit is good enough to go in the top 32, but he’s probably going to slide into the second round like Greedy Williams did last year.

Corner Kristian Fulton has first round skills, but he’s more likely to end up going around the late 30s to early 40s. The same goes for RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who’s not a sure-thing for the second round, much less the first.

So …

How Many LSU Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

No way it’s getting to six.

It’s really, really, really hard to get six players drafted in the first round, and LSU has just four – Burrow, Chaisson, Queen and Jefferson – who’ll likely be selected on Day One. It’s going to be a stretch to get to five, much less six.

The +180 on the over is a nice invitation, but don’t accept it.

NFL Draft 2020: Alabama

Three Crimson Tide players were selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, four were selected on Day One in 2018, and four were picked in 2017.

Indianapolis Colt center Ryan Kelly was the only Bama player taken in the 2016 first round, Amari Cooper was the only first rounder in 2015, and just two were gone early in 2014.

In fact, the last time more than five Alabama players were selected in the first round was …

Never.

And the last time Alabama had more than four players selected in the first round of an NFL Draft was …

Never.

But the over/under line on the total number of Alabama players drafted in the first round is a whopping 5.5.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

So can the Crimson Tide obliterate its own record for the number of players picked early, and do it from a team that didn’t even make it into the College Football Playoff last season?

Yeah. It’s possible.

Start with the sure things. QB Tua Tagovailoa, OT Jedrick Wills, WR Jerry Jeudy, and WR Henry Ruggs are all certain to go in the top 20, if not top 15.

But that’s just four, and you need two more to hit the over on the 5.5.

Safety Xavier McKinney is a wee bit of a wild-card. He should be a top 25 pick, but that’s hardly a sure thing with the safeties likely to slip this year. But  realistically, McKinney is a first rounder, and there’s five, and there’s Bama’s record-setting first round.

It’ll take one more to hit the over.

Trevon Diggs, come on down.

The talented corner is a mid-second round prospect who could sneak into the end of the first round with a little bit of luck, but that’s a massive call. Defensive end/edge rusher Terrell Lewis is the only other Bama player who’ll be within sniffing distance of Round One, but … nah.

So …

How Many Alabama Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

Five.

McKinney will make it five in the first round, and you’ll have to hold your breath on Diggs. Lewis won’t go in the top 32, but Diggs could go anywhere from 30 to 45.

The value might not be there on the under, but there isn’t enough upside to roll the dice on the over.

And the ten 2020 NFL Draft position prop bets that appear to be a wee bit favorable in terms of three thins, 1) value, 2) value and 3) value are …

All lines come from BetMGM.

10. 2nd Defensive Lineman Drafted

PICK: Javon Kinlaw +180

We’re all assuming that Chase Young is a mortal lock to be the first defensive lineman taken – he’s a +1800, by the way – but Auburn DT Derrick Brown is being thrown out there as a possible top ten overall pick, and potentially even top five. The problem is the value – he’s a -323 to be the second D lineman selected.

South Carolina’s Javon Kinlaw has a bigger upside, better tools, and is a bigger shot for the start. He’s not a fantastic value, but at +180, there’s at least a bit more of a boost if you get it right.
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

[lawrence-related id=510943]

9. 1st Safety Drafted

PICK: Grant Delpit, +210

It’s very, very possible that Delpit is a better safety than Alabama’s Xavier McKinney. McKinney is the overwhelming favorite to be the first safety off the board – he’s a -304 – but there’s no fun or value in that. It only takes one team to like Delpit, who was a possible top ten overall prospect before last season began.

Jeremy Chinn of Southern Illinois (+700) and Lenoir-Rhyne’s Kyle Dugger (+3300) have the best tools of any safety in the draft, but that’s taking a massive chance on fantastic value.
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

8. 1st Quarterback Drafted

PICK: Tua Tagovailoa +900

It’s going to be Joe Burrow to Cincinnati to kick it all off, but … go ahead with a total shot for the stars at +900.

Burrow is a -10000 value for the 1st quarterback drafted, but if you want to get crazy, it’s possible the Bengals could trade down. It’s not totally insane to think that they might like Tagovailoa better.
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

[lawrence-related id=510980]

7. 1st Offensive Lineman Drafted

PICK: Mekhi Becton +500

Welcome to the theme across this whole piece – never underestimate what NFL teams think of guys with freakish tools and abilities. To be warned, there’s a better 1st Offensive Lineman Drafted pick to be had, but Louisville’s Mekhi Becton is the best value shot.

Georgia’s Andrew Thomas at +750 isn’t bad, but there are three O lineman – Alabama’s Jedrick Wills, Iowa’s Tristan Wirfs, and Becton – who are all in the same bag. Pick one out, and you might have the right guy. The 365-pound Becton is a great value at what appears to be a 30% shot.
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

[lawrence-related id=510943]

6. 2nd Quarterback Drafted

PICK: Jordan Love +3500

Value, value, value.

It’s the one big question that no one seems to have a handle on – how do teams rank the top quarterbacks? Everyone’s being more coy than usual about this, and there’s a deafening silence when it comes to Utah State’s Jordan Love.

If we’re all in agreement that Joe Burrow is the first quarterback gone, how much is everyone worrying about Tua Tagovailoa’s hip? No, really, how big of a concern is it for a top five overall pick? He’s at -139 to be the second quarterback taken.

Justin Herbert is the stand up double of a call at +100. This might be a case of We Should’ve Seen It Coming – someone trades heaven and earth to move up to get him. However, at +3500, Love is an interesting call if someone sees something they really, really like.

What ten college football teams should be better than the current win total projections? Here are the – potentially – ten best value bets.

Caesars Sportsbook and BetMGM have released every college football team’s win total, line, and odds to win the conference.

There are several early win totals that appear to be a bit off – check out all of them here, compared to the CFN initial prediction for what the win total lines would be – but ten really seem to be really askew.

One quick note: win totals are for the regular season only, so no bowls or conference championships. Just in case you dabble …

10. West Virginia

Caesars Win Total: 5.5
Win Total Should Be Set At: 7
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Neal Brown was able to keep his team fighting through a rough first season. The program had to undergo an overhaul after losing a slew of key parts – including head coach Dana Holgorsen – but it kept on battling and won two of its last three games to finish 5-7.

All you’re asking for is one more win.

The team is going to be better. The offensive parts should be in place to do far more after sputtering and coughing throughout 2019, and the schedule should help.

Eastern Kentucky, Maryland, and a home game against Kansas all enough to bring a base of three wins. The Big 12 overall isn’t appreciably better, but Brown’s Mountaineers will be.
West Virginia Schedule Analysis

9. Colorado

Caesars Win Total: 3
Win Total Should Be Set At: 5
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Apparently, Vegas really, really, really doesn’t seem to think much of the hiring of Karl Dorrell.

It’s going to take some work with the passing game after losing QB Steven Montez and top targets Laviska Shenault and Tony Brown, but the running game should be okay and eight of the top 11 tacklers are expected to return.

The Buffs won’t be world-beaters, but four of their first six games are against teams that didn’t go bowling last year. Be warned, though, getting by Colorado State and Fresno State early on will be vital to get to four wins.

There will be an upset or two along the way, especially with UCLA, Arizona State and Washington State all coming to Boulder.
Colorado Schedule Analysis

[lawrence-related id=510436]

8. Louisiana Tech

Caesars Win Total: 7.5
Win Total Should Be Set At: 9
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

There’s a whole lot to like about a team that won nine regular season games last season, and would’ve been at least ten if it wasn’t for a few key late season suspensions.

This year’s version should be almost as strong.

Replacing QB J’Mar Smith will be Job One, and a few of the top tacklers are done, but almost all of the top targets return, the pass rush should be great, and the schedule is more than manageable.

Seven games are against teams that didn’t go bowling, and other than road dates at Baylor and Vanderbilt – both are winnable – there isn’t a whole lot to worry about away from Ruston.

They can afford to lose to the Power Five teams, drop the game at Southern Miss, and have room to spare for another loss – like to Marshall – to get to eight wins.
Louisiana Tech Schedule Analysis

[lawrence-related id=510303]

7. Stanford

Caesars Win Total: 5.5
Win Total Should Be Set At: 7
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

For this, you’re banking on the idea that 2019 was a strange anomaly under David Shaw.

Stanford was a consistent wrecking ball for the previous ten seasons – winning eight games or more in each one – but last year started out strange and never got going. There were too many early injuries, the offensive line was decimated, and the team couldn’t get the O going with now-Mississippi State QB KJ Costello hurting.

There’s no way Shaw suffers two losing seasons in a row.

The team is loaded with veterans, the lines should be far stronger, and a schedule with William & Mary, Arizona, and UCLA in the first month should provide a nice base of wins.

You only need six wins to get this right. and with Washington State, Oregon State, Colorado and BYU at home, there’s a chance you’ll get it with plenty of room to spare.
Stanford Schedule Analysis

[lawrence-related id=510277]

6. Kansas State

Caesars Win Total: 6
Win Total Should Be Set At: 8.5
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

The win total is just six for a team that pulled off eight win in Chris Klieman’s first season.

A few new running backs have to emerge, but QB Skylar Thompson is back along with most of his receivers, five of the top seven tacklers return, and …

Okay, the lines need an overhaul. That’s why you play Buffalo, North Dakota, and Vanderbilt in the first three games. Even better, the Wildcats go on a run of five games in six – and six in eight – against teams that didn’t go bowling.

Assume a good early run of wins, throw in the home dates against Kansas and Texas Tech, and get a road victory somewhere over West Virginia or TCU.

Six wins is a lock. Seven … no problem.

NCAAF Free Predictions

Presented by Winners and Whiners in partnership with CFN

The final full week of college football is here. Last week, there was one major upset and it saw No. 6 Oregon loss at unranked Arizona State, 31-28. With rivalry week, there are some stinkers (Georgia/Georgia Tech) and then there is No. 2 Ohio State at No. 13 Michigan; No. 5 Alabama at No. 15 Auburn; and No. 9 Oklahoma at No. 21 Oklahoma State.

(note: These picks were made by our Editor and are subject to change. Check out WinnersandWhiners.com for a full analysis and update on each matchup)

* It’s expected to be cold and rainy in Ann Arbor. That might be a good things for the Wolverines to slow down that Ohio State offense. Michigan hasn’t beaten Ohio State since 2011. OSU turned the ball over three times last week. This could be another sloppy affair and the Wolverines are on a roll. Take the Wolverines to cover at home.

*Alabama quarterback Mac Jones gets his first big test against Auburn on Saturday. Auburn has three pretty tight losses. Their offense struggles moving the ball agaisnt good defenses. Their defense has been very good, holding a great LSU offense to just 23 points on the road. Alabama will miss Tua Tagovailoa in this one. Taking Auburn here and the hook.

*Oklahoma loves getting behind and coming back to win. Last week, they finally got a big lead but nearly blew it late as Jalen Hurts had an awful passing game, but did run for 173 yards and two score to help the Sooners beat TCU by four. Oklahoma State has won four straight after losing at home to Baylor, 45-27. The Sooners still have a slight shot to make the CFP but they need help. This will be another shootout but the Cowboys cover at home.

NFL Free Predictions, Previews from Winners & Whiners: Week 13

The NFL free previews and predictions for Week 13 from Winners & Whiners

[jwplayer PkCtjTd4-boEY74VG]

NFL Football Free Predictions

Presented by Winners and Whiners in partnership with CFN!

In the NFL, we’re headed to Week 13 after a week that saw no major upsets, though a few surprises with San Francisco dismantling Green Bay on Sunday night, while the Ravens crushed the Rams on Monday night. Those two teams meet on Sunday from Baltimore.. In other action on Sunday, Tennessee visits Indianapolis, while New England meets Houston on the road.

(note: These picks were made by our Editor and are subject to change. Check out WinnersandWhiners.com for a full analysis and update on each matchup)

*Can anybody stop Baltimore’s offense? Once again, weather might play a factor and that can help slow down the Ravens offense. The Niners have a great defense, but they are also going up against a tough D on the road. They struggled against Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray. Both mobile quarterbacks who can run. Lamar Jackson is in a different stratosphere as a runn. Take the Ravens to continue to roll at home.

*Tennessee and Indianapolis are both 6-5 in the AFC, so this one is big. The Colts won the first meeting on the road in Sept. 15, 19-17. But that was before Ryan Tannehill took over at quarterback for Marcus Mariota. The Colts have been struggling lately, losing three of their last four games. The Colts are strong against the run, which is a must against Derrick Henry. But I’m going with the Titans because I don’t trust Adam Vinatieri in what should be a very close game and Tannehill has taken over this team. Take the points on the road.

*Another Sunday and the Patriots get another big test. After losing at Baltimore by 17, they found a way to put Philadelphia on the road and Dallas at home despite scoring a combined 30 points. This one is going to be another difficult road game, but unlike Philadelphia, the Texans actually have competent receivers and a decent running game. They also have Deshaun Watson an a few days of extra rest. Take the Texans at home.

 Pete Fiutak @PeteFiutak

And here we go … it’s all been building towards these two weeks.

ACC Betting Advice, Final Thoughts

Let’s not get too cranked up about Liberty, and let’s not get too into the idea that Virginia is looking ahead to the game that actually does matter against Virginia Tech. Remember, this is the same Liberty team that was shutout 24-0 by Syracuse and and lost by ten a Rutgers team that’s really, realty bad at college football. The Cavs -17 is nice and low.

Yeah, Notre Dame has the ability to turn the lights out on a one-dimensional team – like it did last week against Navy – but Boston College doesn’t seem to have problems only doing one thing really, really well. Liked it at BC getting 18, love it at 21.5.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Don’t be that guy who bets on FCS vs. FBS games … unless the line on the Mercer-North Carolina game goes up to 40 or more. It’s at UNC -39 right now, and that’s about right. The Tar Heels will win easily, but the Bears are just good enough to score a touchdown or two and keep this from blowing up.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

Home team, slightly better defense, a bit more offensive diversity, playing better overall … don’t think too hard about this Virginia Tech is only giving away 3.5 at home against Pitt – it moved up from 1 and will end up around 4.5. Be careful with the point total that’s right at around 46, but is moving.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, Syracuse showed up against Duke last week, came up with a slew of takeaways, and won with stunning ease. That’s not happening again on the road at Louisville. However, the Cardinals aren’t going to make this easy. You’re fine at UofL at 9.5, but wait until the last second – it’ll go up to at least 10 by gametime.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction

Miami going down the road to play at FIU seems like it should be a moment for the Group of Fiver. All of these guys know each other, FIU will get up for the game at a whole other level, and … whatever. The Canes are going to care about this, too. FIU hasn’t beaten anyone and was rolled by 30 against FAU and by 33 by a Middle Tennessee team that just lost to Rice. The Canes are a bit of a gift at 20.5.
CFN Game Preview, Prediction
Bet on this, BetMGM latest line

I have NO idea why I like Duke getting 7 against Wake Forest, and it’s scaring me that others are jumping on this, too. It was at 6.5 to start, moved up to 7.5, and is now coming back down. The only reason to like this? Duke is better than it’s been playing, and – 44-10 win over NC State aside – Wake Forest really might not be the same without WR Sage Surratt.
