Not to be glib, but can PJ Walker be any worse than Baker Mayfield?
Mayfield’s ankle has been a problem and Walker is likely going to get the start. No matter what’s happening on offense to start the Steve Wilks era, it’s going to be the defense that has to get this done.
The Rams still can’t seem to get it all together with just 19 points in the last two weeks, one of the weakest offenses in the NFL, and with no running game that’s getting worse with Cam Akers expected to be out.
Just keep this close into the fourth. The Rams haven’t been sharp enough to run away and hide against anyone so far, and Carolina is playing with absolutely no pressure.
New coach, new quarterback, new season – the Panthers can just turn it loose, at least in theory.
The Panthers just aren’t able to move the ball.
The defense hasn’t been a prize on third downs, and it’s not holding up well enough when it needs to try taking over the game, but it’s not the biggest problem in the 1-4 start.
The running game doesn’t work lately, the passing attack has yet to hit 250 yards – that might change under Walker – and the O is the worst in the NFL on third downs.

Just keep hitting the midrange passes.
Matthew Stafford is off. Whether he’s banged up or he’s missing a No. 2 target to click with – this Allen Robinson thing isn’t working – there’s a problem. The way-too-banged-up Carolina secondary might be just the cure for that.
The Rams aren’t going to do anything crazy offensively, but methodical will work here right up until Walker goes off for a few big third quarter drives. They’ll make this interesting, but it won’t be enough.

The Steelers can’t get the offense going.
To be fair, no one should have to start as a rookie against Buffalo, but Kenny Pickett didn’t get his yards until the 38-3 game was well out of reach, the running game couldn’t help the cause, and now it’s up to Tampa Bay’s defense to keep that all going.
The Buccaneer defense hasn’t been dominant, but it hasn’t been bad outside of a brilliant day from Patrick Mahomes in the first half of a 41-31 Kansas City win.

They couldn’t do it early on last week against Josh Allen, but they have to start up from by keeping the suddenly non-existent Tampa ground game to nothing – it hasn’t hit 75 yards since the opener against Dallas – and then just make 12 rush a wee bit.
Yeah, duh, everyone has spent decades trying to make Tom Brady hurry, but the big downfield pass plays can’t be there like they were against Buffalo. Short quick-hitters are fine in lieu of a ground game.

Tampa Bay was good for a few turnovers a game for a few weeks before its clean performance against Atlanta, but the Steelers will get two in this and capitalize on both opportunities.
The problem is the Tampa receivers – they’re relatively healthy compared to earlier in the season. This will be more of a fight than the Bucs might like, but they’ll pull away late.

Just don’t turn the ball over.
Carolina is going to be deep in the hunt for the No. 1 overall pick as the season goes on – or at least in the top ten – but it was finally able to get a win last week against New Orleans with a +3 turnover margin.
Arizona hasn’t been perfect, and there are big concerns, but it has only given up one turnover so far.
The Panthers aren’t doing enough against the run, their offense is among the worst in the the league – especially running the ball – and now Christian McCaffrey is iffy.
But …
Few teams have as many injury issues as Arizona.
Kyler Murray is good enough to overcome a slew of problems, but the passing game is among the worst in the NFL at hitting the downfield throws, the defense is last in the NFL at allowing big plays, and Carolina and Baker Mayfield are way overdue to make things happen.
Carolina has been balanced with a solid ground game, but the Panthers will push past 200 passing yards for the first time since the opener against Cleveland.

It took a miracle for Arizona to come up with its lone win of the season in overtime against the Raiders.
This is has been one of those teams going back to last year that thrives on the road – 8-1 away from Glendale before the playoffs – and it needs the plane ride.
The Carolina offense won’t be able to take advantage of the porous Cardinal defense.

How did the Giants win that?
They got by Tennessee in a 21-20 thriller. Saquon Barkley was brilliant, Daniel Jones hit 17-of-21 passes, and the defense bottled up Derrick Henry and held firm in the fourth quarter.
Carolina couldn’t get the running game going in its 26-24 loss to Cleveland, Baker Mayfield was under too much pressure, and there wasn’t any hope against the run.
Barkley might not hit 164 yards again this week, but the Giants will be in great shape if they can average over five yards per carry.
As ugly as things got, there were some bright spots against the Browns.
Christian McCaffrey showed a bit of his old pop, Mayfield wasn’t awful, and the secondary didn’t allow much down the field.
The Giants might have pulled off the win at Tennessee, but the offensive line allowed Jones to get popped too easily and coming up with third down conversions was a major problem.
The Panthers have to get McCaffrey the ball in his hands more than 14 times, Mayfield has to be more consistent, and …

The Giants will hold McCaffrey in check, Mayfield will be under too much pressure, and Jones will be better at moving the chains.
