Cardinals hopeful Mason Cole, Jalen Thompson won’t be out too long with injuries

Both left the game in Week 1 with injuries and did not return to action. Cole hurt his hamstring, while Thompson has an ankle injury.

The Arizona Cardinals had two starters go down with injuries in their 24-20 Week 1 over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. Starting safety Jalen Thompson injured his ankle on the second play of the game and starting center Mason Cole exited in the first half with a hamstring injury.

Neither player was able to return to the game. Thompson played only two snaps, while Cole played 36.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury did not give much of an update on Monday when he spoke with reporters.

“Still working through it on those two guys, with Mason and J.T.,” he said. “Hopefully not too long, but we’ll see tomorrow where that is at.”

If they have to miss time and potentially the Cardinals’ Week 2 game at home against the Washington Football Team, Lamont Gaillard would get the start at center.

At safety, it would probably be Deionte Thompson who would get the start. Thompson was inactive on Sunday against the 49ers and Chris Banjo played 58 defensive snaps after Jalen Thompson exited the game. Kingsbury praised Banjo’s play. He is a backup at both safety positions and plays a lot on special teams. But he would likely slide back into that backup and special teams role if Jalen has to miss time.

The first injury report of the week won’t come out until Wednesday.

Chris Streveler set to be gameday backup QB for now for Cardinals

Kliff Kingsbury has liked what he has seen from the former CFL QB. Streveler also gives the Cardinals some special teams flexibility.

One of the surprises on Sunday for the Arizona Cardinals when they played the San Francisco 49ers was the fact that quarterback Brett Hundley was inactive. Instead, it was former Canadian Football League QB Chris Streveler who was active and even came in for a snap on offense, picking up a first down on a three-yard run off a quarterback sneak.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters on Monday that is how it is going to be for the time being.

“We really like Chris,” Kingsbury said in his Monday media session. “Didn’t know what to expect. Watched his CFL stuff and he was running around out there making a lot of plays, and then you get him here and he did a nice job picking up our offense.”

Kingsbury called him smart, athletic and “very accurate.”

“We wanted to get him involved and see where it goes,” he added.

While some compare Streveler to a guy like the New Orleans Saints’ Taysom Hill, who plays some quarterback, plays on special teams, lines up at tight end or even at receiver, Kingsbury doesn’t see that in him.

“He plays quarterback, he said. “It’s not one of those deals where he’s a ‘slash’ guy. He’s a real quarterback and has done a real nice job.”

Kingsbury praised Brett Hundley for what he did last year when he stepped in for Kyler Murray and helped the Cardinals close out a win on the road over the Seattle Seahawks, but did indicate the Streveler is the backup for now.

“We just feel like, for now, ‘Strev’ give us a dynamic there with his special teams ability we’re going to have him up (active) right now.”

Streveler played one special teams snap as well as once snap on offense in Week 1.

Cardinals open Week 2 as heavy favorites over Washington

They are 6.5-point favorites opening the week of their home opener against the 1-0 Washington Football Team.

The Arizona Cardinals are coming off a Week 1 win over the San Francisco 49ers. The win was impressive. Their next opponent, the Washington Football Team, also won their season opener, a 27-17 comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

The wins were not seen as equal by Vegas oddsmakers.

Week 2 opening lines came out Sunday evening and the Cardinals are heavy favorites to win their home opener over Washington, according to BetMGM.

On the money line, the Cardinals are -295 while Washington is +240, meaning you have to bet roughly three times what you will win to wager on the Cardinals, while you can win nearly two and a half times what you bet on Washington.

The Cardinals are also 6.5-point favorites against the spread. To win a bet on the Cardinals here, they would have to win by a touchdown or more, while a bet on Washington wins if they keep it within six points or less.

The over/under is set at 45.5 points. Both teams’ season openers had a combined point total of 44 points.
