Cardinals to sign K Matt Ammendola to practice squad

The Cardinals have a plan for this week in case Matt Prater is not able to play this week.

The Arizona Cardinals brought in four different kickers for a tryout on Monday, as Matt Prater was unable to finish the team’s 26-16 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

They will sign one of the kickers they brought in.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, they will add Matt Ammendola to the practice squad. Ammendola was one of the four kickers in on Monday.

Ammendola filled in for two weeks for the Kansas City Chiefs this season. He made 3-of-4 field goals and 3-of-4 extra points.

He played 11 games for the New York Jets last season, making 13-of-19 field goals and 14-of-15 extra points.

He has not made a field goal in his career from 50 yards or more, and he is only 2-of-5 from 40-49 yards.

As a practice squad addition, it does not mean he will handle kicking duties. If Prater ends up being good to go, he will not occupy a spot on the active roster. But if Prater needs the week off, the Cardinals can use one of their standard elevations from the practice squad to add him to the active roster so he can play.

The Cardinals will release their first injury report of the week on Wednesday.

What’s new with the Eagles in 2022?

Take a look at what’s new with the Eagles in 2022.

The undefeated Philadelphia Eagles will travel to Glendale this Sunday for an exciting matchup with the Arizona Cardinals.

The Cards finally found some positive momentum in Carolina last week with a 26-16 win and are looking to finally win a home game. The Eagles will be no small task in doing so, however.

General manager Howie Roseman had an excellent offseason, one where he was aggressive in adding premier talent to both sides of the ball. The highlight of the bunch, of course, was acquiring wideout A.J. Brown from the Tennessee Titans.

Brown has been excellent for the Eagles to this point in the season with 404 yards in his first four games. He and second-year wideout Devonta Smith make one of the league’s best receiver duos.

Roseman did plenty more to poise his Eagles for a playoff run. He signed former Cardinal Haason Reddick to a three-year deal, a player the Cards had interest in bringing back. Ultimately, Reddick wanted to return to his hometown.

Just before the start of the regular season, Roseman acquired slot cornerback C.J. Gardner-Johnson from the Saints. It was a surprising move, but amidst contract fallouts with the Saints, Johnson was on the trade block.

The Eagles also signed former Giants cornerback James Bradberry, who has been phenomenal in his first four games. He and fellow Pro Bowl caliber cornerback Darius Slay have been lights out for the Eagles defense.

Philadelphia selected DT Jordan Davis with the No. 13 overall pick, a move that has made their rush defense one of the best in the NFL. Their defensive line, highlighted by Davis and Fletcher Cox, is among the league’s best.

The Eagles are a very complete roster and the Cardinals will need to play to their potential for four quarters to win this one. Take a look below at just how much talent the Eagles added this offseason.

Eagles’ key offseason additions

  • WR A.J. Brown
  • OLB Hasson Reddick
  • CB C.J. Gardner-Johnson
  • CB James Bradberry
  • ILB Kyzir White
  • DT Jordan Davis

Eagles’ key offseason losses

  • G Brandon Brooks
  • CB Steven Nelson
  • S Rodney McLeod

Cardinals are home underdogs in Week 5 vs. undefeated Eagles

We take a look at the betting odds for the Cardinals’ Week 5 home game against the Eagles.

The Arizona Cardinals will once again be underdogs at home this week. After a 26-16 win on the road over the Carolina Panthers in Week 4 to improve to 2-2, they will host the 4-0 Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5.

The Eagles have scored at least 24 points in every game they have played this season, averaging 28.6 per contest. Defensively, they have 10 takeaways and 16 sacks.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts has thrown for or rushed for a touchdown in every game this season.

It will be a tough game.

That is why the Cardinals are the betting underdogs in this contest.

Let’s have a look at the odds and the lines for the Cardinals’ Week 5 game against the Eagles, according to Tipico Sportsbook.

Eagles at Cardinals Week 5 odds and lines

Moneyline:

  • Eagles -230
  • Cardinals +190

With -230 odds on the moneyline, the Eagles are given 69.7% implied odds of winning the game outright. It would take a $230 moneyline bet on the Eagles to win $100 if they beat the Cardinals outright.

At +190, the Cardinals are given 34.48% implied odds of winning the game. A $100 moneyline wager on Arizona would win $190 if they pull off the upset and beat the Eagles.

The Eagles are 4-0 and the Cardinals are 2-2 this season.

Spread

  • Eagles -5.5 (-108)
  • Cardinals +5.5 (-112)

The Eagles are 5.5-point road favorites. A $108 ATS bet on the Eagles would win $100 if they beat the Cardinals by six or more points.

The Cardinals are 5.5-point home underdogs. A $112 ATS bet on Arizona would win $100 if the Cardinals beat the Eagles, if the game ends in a tie or if the Cardinals lose by no more than five points.

The Eagles are 3-1 ATS this season. The Cardinals are 2-2 ATS.

Total (Over/Under)

  • Over 49.5 (-112)
  • Under 49.5 (-108)

A $112 wager on the Over will win $100 if the Cardinals and Eagles score a combined 50 or more points.

A $108 bet on the Under will win $100 if they combine for no more than 49 points.

The Eagles are 2-2 O/U and the Cardinals are 1-2-1 O/U this season.

Eagles vs. Cardinals history

The Eagles and Cardinals have met 121 times in their history dating back to 1935, including 3 postseason games.

The Cardinals lead the all-time series 60-56-5. They won the last matchup, a 33-26 home win in 2020 and have won 3 of the last 4 meetings. The Cardinals are 6-2 against the Eagles, dating back to the 2008 NFC Championship Game, when the Cardinals won to make it to the Super Bowl.

The Eagles have not beaten the Cardinals in State Farm Stadium since it opened in 2005.

Cardinals could benefit from ManningCast curse in game vs. Eagles

Eagles QB Jalen Hurts was on Monday night’s ManningCast as a guest in the second quarter when Philly faces the Cardinals in Week 5.

The Arizona Cardinals have a tough matchup this weekend at home in Week 5 as they take on the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles. Fortune might be on their side and it has nothing to do with anything having to do with scheme, talent or injuries.

They might benefit from a sort of a curse.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts was a guest on ESPN’s “ManningCast,” the alternate broadcast of the Monday night game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers.

Former NFL quarterbacks and brothers Peyton Manning and Eli Manning break down the game and interview guests.

There is a “ManningCast curse” on NFL players who appear on the broadcast.

Last season, all seven active players who were guests on the broadcast had their teams lose the next week.

StateMuse tracked the curse in 2021.

The teams of active NFL players who appear on the broadcast with the Mannings were 0-7 in the game following the appearance, at least so far.

These are the victims.

  • Chiefs TE Travis Kelce and then-Seahawks QB Russell Wilson appeared in Week 1 last year. Both the Chiefs and Seahawks lost in Week 2.
  • TE Rob Gronkowski, who played for the Buccaneers last season, appeared on Week 2 and then Tampa Bay lost in Week 3.
  • Rams QB Matthew Stafford was a guest in Week 3 and then the Cardinals beat the Rams in Week 4.
  • Bucs QB Tom Brady was on in Week 7. The Bucs lost the next week.
  • Bills QB Josh Allen appeared in Week 8 and the Bills lost in Week 9.
  • Packers QB Aaron Rodgers was a guest in Week 17. Green Bay lost in Week 18.

The trend was broken with the first ManningCast of 2022 as Giants RB Saquon Barkley was a guest in Week 1 and the Giants won their Week 2 game.

So the record for teams after a player appears on the broadcast is 1-7.

Is the curse broken or was that the aberration?

Hurts, leading the 4-0 Eagles, was the Mannings’ guest during the second quarter Monday night and will face the Cardinals in Week 5 at State Farm Stadium.

The Cardinals benefitted once last year with Stafford’s appearance to snap their losing streak against the Rams in Week 4. Could it happen again or will the ManningCast in 2022 be more a blessing than a curse?

Cardinals work out 4 kickers with Matt Prater hurt

Former Colts kicker Rodrigo Blankenship was among the four kickers they worked out.

Arizona Cardinals kicker Matt Prater entered Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers with a hip injury but still played. However, after kicking two extra points and two field goals, he was unable to finish the game.

Running back Eno Benjamin handled the final three kickoffs and after the Cardinals scored their final touchdown, they went for two instead of kicking the extra point.

With Prater’s availability for the next week uncertain, the Cardinal brought in four kickers for a tryout on Monday, according to the NFL transaction report.

WR Antoine Wesley, CB Antonio Hamilton, QB Colt McCoy designated to return

The Cardinals could get reinforcements on offense and defense this week to face the undefeated Eagles.

The Arizona Cardinals could get some reinforcements this week when they take on the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles this coming Sunday afternoon at State Farm Stadium.

The team announced it has designated three players to return from injured reserve, allowing them to start practicing. It opens a 21-day window in which they can be activated and retake their place on the 53-man roster.

They designated receiver Antoine Wesley and quarterback Colt McCoy to return from injured reserve and designated cornerback Antonio Hamilton to return from the NFI (non-football injury) list.

Wesley suffered a hip/groin injury back in training camp and has not yet played this season. McCoy had a calf injury and Hamilton suffered serious burns in a cooking accident at home.

Head coach Kliff Kingsbury said last week that it might be a little much to expect Hamilton back this week. At the very least, they can see how he looks in practice.

McCoy and Wesley are likely candidates to be activated this week. Wesley’s return will be welcome, especially if A.J. Green is still sidelined with a bone bruise in his knee.

Teams are able to designate up to eight players to return from injured reserve, NFI or the practice squad injured reserve in a season.

CB Antonio Hamilton unlikely to return from NFI in Week 5

Arizona Cardinals cornerback Antonio Hamilton is progressing well in his rehab, but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be ready for next Sunday’s matchup against the Eagles.

The Arizona Cardinals had a freak accident in the cornerback room when projected starter Antonio Hamilton suffered serious burns in a cooking incident.

Hamilton fortunately avoided any major long-term health complications but was placed on the NFI, putting him out at least the first four games of the season.

Following Sunday’s game with the Carolina Panthers, Hamilton is technically eligible to return by rule. However, Kliff Kingsbury didn’t sound overly optimistic that he would be available for Week 5’s contest with the Philadelphia Eagles.

“He’s moving around good,” he said Wednesday after practice. “Next week maybe a little aggressive, but we’re hopeful. I think we’ve got to get him out there to see what he’s retained as far as the football stuff, see how he moves around and make sure he is comfortable, but he looks good in his in his rehab.”

Hamilton posted videos on social media of him going through defensive back drills and looked to be in good shape. The Cardinals could use Hamilton back on the field sooner rather than later, as he was the projected No. 2 cornerback before his injury.

Having Hamilton in the fold allows the Cardinals to move Byron Murphy around in the slot and feel comfortable with their two outside corners in Hamilton and Marco Wilson.

The Cardinals could be looking at serious reinforcements in the following weeks with the return of DeAndre Hopkins, Rondale Moore and Hamilton.
