Why North Alabama Will Win

There isn’t a huge sample size, but the North Alabama pass defense hasn’t been too bad so far. Overall – not helped by an offense that’s not scoring enough – the defense has been able to hold up with excellent size at defensive tackle.

Even with games against Liberty and Southern Miss on the road, the Lions have been able to hang around – they gave the Flames one of their tougher games of the season in a 28-7 loss.

Why BYU Will Win

There’s just no North Alabama offense.

It was a fight just to get to 17 points against Jacksonville State, the ground game averages fewer than two yards per carry with just 149 yards in the three games, and the pass protection has been a disaster.

BYU will try to flex a little muscle as it’s in a beauty contest now, with the pass rush doing enough to own the North Alabama backfield. Be shocked if the Lions come even close to 50 rushing yards.

Why BYU Will Win

America, welcome to Zach Wilson.

You might have heard about the BYU quarterback as part of the Heisman race, or maybe as a first round draft pick, and here he is with a national audience to make his case for both things.

He’s hitting 75% of his passes for 2,152 yards with 19 yards and two interceptions to go along with seven touchdown passes. He’s got a good enough arm, great mobility, and the deep ball ability to stretch the field. But it also helps that he’s got the running game to take the pressure off.

Wilson and the passing game have been so good that the ground attack doesn’t get noticed. The offensive line keeps Wilson clean, the pass rush has been great, and the run D has allowed fewer than 100 yards per game.

This is a tested, jelled team with seven games under its belt.

Why Boise State Will Win

Boise State hasn’t been perfection its first two games, but it hasn’t been far off.

It’s not getting flagged, there’s only been one giveaway, and the passing game has been close to flawless no matter who’s been under center.

The D might have had issues with Air Force and its running game – it gave up 415 yards – but that’s Air Force. This is a better defensive front than it showed, the pass rush on the outside will be there to at least bother Wilson, and the offensive parts are good enough to keep up the pace.

For all the amazing things BYU has done it beat … UTSA? Texas State? WKU? Crushing Navy was nice, but whatever. Beating Houston on the road was great, but the secondary had issues.

This is by far the toughest game yet for the Cougars, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Will it be Hank Bachmeier or Jack Sears at quarterback for Boise State? They’ve both been great, but the coaching staff has been mum on Bachmeier who missed the Air Force game. With or without him, this will be the game for the Boise State running game.

This will be more of a grinding game than anything high-flying. Wilson will be more steady than sensational, but he’ll be good enough to show what all the fuss is about.

The defense has been a relative plus, especially against the decent passing teams.

The Hilltoppers gave up three touchdown passes in the opener to Louisville, and that’s been about it, allowing two scores in the last five games. The picks aren’t there, but quarterbacks are only hitting 58% of their tries with teams not hitting 200 yards in four of the last five games.

It’s a broken record if you’ve read the stuff about WKU so far in 2020, but this team just … doesn’t … score.

The 24 points in the loss to Liberty was the high so far, and it hasn’t scored more than 21 against anyone else or 14 in any of the last three games. The O just doesn’t go anywhere.

BYU’s offense continues to be a machine. Zach Wilson might not be the best quarterback in college football, but he’s hitting 78% of his passes with 16 touchdowns, one pick – it came in the opener – and six rushing scores. He’s been brilliant, and it’s not going to take too many scoring drives to put this away.

The passing game is good enough to keep up.

It’s not going to bomb away like Houston did last week, but it’ll be able to push past 250 yards and around 300 against a Cougar secondary that gets hit hard by teams trying to keep up.

For all of the good things BYU does, it has allowed more yards in each successive game, stopping Navy with 149 yards and moving up from there to last week’s 438 total yard day against Houston. Texas State has the firepower to potentially keep that going, but …

Why BYU Will Win

An argument can be made that Zach Wilson is the best quarterback in college football so far not named Trevor Lawrence.

Wilson is hitting 79% of his passes for 1,641 yards with 12 touchdowns and a pick, and he ran for six touchdowns. Texas State doesn’t have the defense that can hold up against what Wilson and the BYU are bringing.

Yes, the Texas State offense is going to be dangerous, but the offensive line is having way too many problems against defenses that can get into the backfield, and BYU is great at that.

What’s Going To Happen

Texas State is going to bring the offense, but the D is going to get torched. It’s an active team that gets around the ball and held up well in close losses to SMU and Boston College, but this is the program’s fifth road game in a row. It’ll show.

Zach Wilson has been special.

The BYU junior quarterback is hitting 81% of his passes for over 300 yards per game with two scores in every game to go along with six rushing touchdowns. He’s bombing away deep, he’s keeping everything moving, and he’s putting together – at least so far – one of the most efficient passing seasons in the history of college football.

The Houston secondary might have been strong against Tulane, but that’s because it didn’t get thrown on enough to matter.

It was just one game, but the UH Cougars turned it over five times against the Green Wave, partly because there was a ton of pressure into the backfield. The BYU Cougars are great at getting to the quarterback.

Why Houston Will Win

The BYU pass defense had its problems against the UTSA offense last week. It was a close 27-20 Cougar win, the defense did a solid job all the way around, and the offense was good – but the 470 yards were the fewest the team came up with in the first four games.

The Houston offense was clicking with the passing game right out of the gate against Tulane.

Yes, the Houston offense wasn’t totally sharp, and yes, it turned the ball over five times, but put it this way. The Cougars were -5 in turnover margin and they still won by 18 points.

There’s a whole lot of explosion and a whole lot of offensive pop to keep up if the BYU offense gets hot right away.

What’s Going To Happen

The Cougars will win.

A million apologies for that.

Houston will push the relatively untested BYU secondary around just enough to make this a fun firefight, but when needed, the BYU running game will take over.

Wilson is playing too well, the lines are playing too well, and this is the game BYU has been waiting for to make a relative splash in an already strong start to the season. It’ll be sharp.

BYU has been beyond dominant.

Navy, Troy, and Louisiana Tech might not be SEC teams, but they’re all bowl-caliber programs that got ripped to shreds by a Cougar tam that’s doing everything right.

It’s not screwing up – BYU leads the nation with the fewest penalties – the pass defense is among the best in the nation, and the offense is the most efficient in college football. QB Zach Wilson has hit 85% of his passes for 949 yards and six touchdowns with one pick, and he ran for five touchdowns.

Add that with the power ground game, and it’s all working.

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Louisiana Tech very, very quietly cranked up the offense over the first two games.

It took a bit to get the season going, and the running game wasn’t great against Southern Miss, but QB Luke Anthony has been strong with 463 yards and eight scores as the new main man for the offense.

He’s been spreading the ball around with Smoke Harris a good midrange target, Adrian Hardy making things happen deep, and a good rotation of backs are there to do enough to finally give the BYU defense something to deal with.

Clemson? Nah. Mississippi State? Nope. Miami? Please.

No one has played better over its first two games of the 2020 season than the BYU Cougars. Granted, beating up Navy and Troy might not be anything amazing, but winning by a combined score of 103-10 with an unstoppable offense and brick wall of a D is what you’re supposed to do against the inferior.

What’s not working? The quarterbacks have combined to his 79% of their passes – including a 472-yard day against Troy – and they’re still not the strongest part of the attack.

The BYU ground game is crushing it so far, and that’s the main problem for Louisiana Tech. The Bulldog lines are okay, but the Cougar fronts have been incredible.

What’s Going To Happen

BYU has been a steamroller. This might be a step up in competition considering Navy didn’t look quite right to start things out, but the Cougars appear to have the attitude and the toughness to come up with another big performance at home.

Louisiana Tech will score early and should make this interesting for a while, but it’ll get worn down by the BYU lines as the game goes on.

Why Troy Will Win

The offense showed off its balance in the 47-14 win over Middle Tennessee. Gunnar Watson threw for 248 yards and two scores, and the running game rumbled for 240 yards and four scores. Once again, it showed it’s going to be one of the Sun Belt’s best offenses.

And the defense tackled.

BYU might have looked like a world-beater in the 55-3 opener against Navy, but it went against a team that didn’t do enough hitting – or any – in the offseason. The Troy defensive front has enough to hold up against the Cougar ground game that rumbled at will from the start on Labor Day night.

Why BYU Will Win

The lines really should be that good.

The offensive line obliterated Navy for a ground attack that ran for 301 yards with big dash after big dash. Tyler Allgeier and Lopini Katoa are two good backs to rotate around, and QB Zach Wilson will push a Troy secondary that didn’t get tested by the Blue Raiders.

LB Isaiah Kaufusi came up with two sacks, the D lived in the Navy backfield, and the pass rush should be a problem from the start against Watson.

What’s Going To Happen

Troy has the offense to come up with a few scores to make the Cougars keep trying. How healthy is BYU after missing the Army game with COVID issues?

The BYU lines won’t dominate like they did against Navy, but they’ll keep Wilson enough time to work. The running game will take over when it needs to in the second half to pull away.

Why BYU Will Win

The Cougars have the linebackers.

How do you stop the Navy option? You get good play on the defensive front that can hold on after getting punched in the mouth by the fullback, and you have experienced, smart, disciplined linebackers who stay in their lanes and can keep making plays in waves.

The BYU linebackers might be the team’s biggest strength, with the depth to keep a good rotation going and the speed and quickness to handle what’s coming on the outside. That, along with a slew of big 300-pounders on the defensive front should be the right type of formula to at least slow down the machine.

Navy’s offense is the Navy offense – it’s plug-and-play, to a certain extent – but this is the first game after the Malcolm Perry era. Is was supposed to be Perry Olsen under center, but now it’s going to be Dalen Morris, but it could be Olsen at times because Morris hasn’t started a game.

Why Navy Will Win

BYU suffered a crippling blow when star TE Matt Bushman was lost for the season in practice. He didn’t just lead the team in receiving yards, he was a go-to guy for Zach Wilson to keep things moving.

It doesn’t exactly help that the top three BYU wide receivers have to be replaced, too.

The Cougars have a good, veteran offensive front, but the running backs need to emerge after a lackluster season. So now Navy’s big potential weakness – a revamped secondary that lost a few key parts to the transfer portal – might just get a bit of a break.

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be a good one on a Monday night.

Navy is going to control the clock, control the tempo, and it should be business as usual with the ground game. However, don’t expect the same explosion the offense had with Perry under center.

The BYU lines will more than hold their own. This is a strong, veteran team with several flaws, but with enough good parts to hold up for a full 60 minutes. The depth at linebacker will be a big deal – the D won’t wear out.

However, Navy will be sharp when it needs to be in the second half. In a back-and-forth game, the Midshipmen will go on a long, long scoring march early in the fourth to take over for good.
