Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The MAC Championship

– 3 Reasons: Jaret Patterson, Jaret Patterson, and Jaret Patterson. Buffalo’s 5-9, 195-pound pinball running back ran for close to 1,800 yards and 19 scores as a sophomore after running for 1,013 yards and 14 touchdowns as a freshman. In just five games he tore off 1,025 yards and 18 touchdowns highlighted by his eight-score day against Kent State. He’s worth the watch.

– This could’ve been a special battle of backs, but Ball State’s Caleb Huntley has opted out and is done for the year. However, the Cardinals still have a good ground game with Justin Hall coming off a 175-yard, two-score day on just ten carries against Western Michigan. He’s not Patterson, but he’s a dangerous gamebreaker.

– This is going to be fun. Buffalo has been one of the MAC’s best teams over the last four years, but it gagged away the 2018 MAC Championship to Northern Illinois and totally whiffed last year with a brutal loss to Kent State that kept it out of the title game. It has a shot at its first MAC title since getting it done in 2008 under Turner Gill. It’s going to care.

Ball State hasn’t had a winning season since 2013, and it hasn’t been in the MAC title game since 2008 when Brady Hoke’s 12-0 squad lost to that Buffalo team. It’s going to care.

Why Akron Will Win

I have a win … I have a win … King of the Castle … King of the Castle …

Akron finally got a win again after missing out on the fun all of last year and through the first four games of this season – beating Bowling Green 31-3 – thanks to a strong day from the defense.

This is still a work in progress for the program, but the team does a whole lot of the little things right. It doesn’t turn the ball over all that much, there aren’t a lot of penalties, and when there are chances to score, the team does it.

It’s getting there that’s the problem.

Why Buffalo Will Win

Jaret Patterson and Kevin Marks.

Patterson has 920 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns in just four games, making a whole lot of national noise by following up his 301-yard, four-touchdown day against Bowling Green with 409 yards and eight scores against Kent State. He’s a pinball with breakaway speed, while Marks is more of a thumper, averaging over six yards per carry with 328 yards and three scores.

Akron can’t stop either of them.

The pass defense is the least efficient in the nation, the run D gives up over 200 yards per outing, and the team doesn’t take the ball away.

Buffalo doesn’t turn the ball over enough to matter.

What’s Going To Happen

The Bulls weren’t able to play last week, and that just means everyone has fresh legs. Patterson will blow past 200 yards with ease and then he’ll sit down early in the second half of the blowout.

Why Kent State Will Win

The Golden Flash offense has been phenomenal.

Okay, so it helps to play Bowling Green and Akron – after starting the season with Eastern Michigan – but this is Kent State. It’s a program that struggled to  do anything offensively not all that long ago, and now it leads the nation in scoring and total offense.

Kent State. In 2017, the team put up 153 points for the entire 12-game season.

The FlashFast style scores in bunches, the team is playing with the highest possible level of confidence, and the ground game is ripping through everything. Buffalo has an offense, too, but its defense isn’t getting into the backfield and it’s been just okay against the run.

Why Buffalo Will Win

Buffalo ain’t Akron or Bowling Green.

The run defense hasn’t been a rock, but it hasn’t needed to be with the way the offense is ripping through everyone at will. Kevin Marks is averaging over six yards per carry with 231 yards in the first three games, and he’s not even the star of the show. Jaret Patterson is coming off a 301-yard day against Bowling Green, he’s averaging over seven yards per carry and scored eight times.

The UB offensive line is dominating. It has yet to allow a sack, and it has given up just three tackles for loss.

The Kent State run defense was hit by Bowling Green for 260 yards, and allowed 212 last week against Akron. UB is going to keep hitting with the 1-2 punch, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Kent State 30, Buffalo 27. It was one of the wildest, craziest, best finishes of the 2019 season when Kent State stormed back and changed the entire program around with a shocking win over the Bulls.

The Golden Flashes went form a three-game losing streak and being knocked out of bowl contention to winning seven in a row with the program’s first bowl victory ever. They also knocked out Buffalo from a MAC championship appearance.

Buffalo will be well motivated, and it’ll win the battle of the running games in a fun firefight.

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Bulls are rolling at will, and Bowling Green isn’t rolling at all.

UB was able to flex its muscles and show of its talent – the best in the MAC – with a statement 42-10 win over Miami University last week. The running game has been terrific behind a dominant line, the passing game is hitting everything deep, and there aren’t enough mistakes to give the Falcons a break.

On the flip side, Bowling Green’s passing game is a disaster, leading to the lack of third down conversions, leading to a tough start, getting blown away by Toledo and Kent State by a combined score of 100-27.

Why Bowling Green Will Win

So what is Bowling Green doing well?

The ground game was able to rumble against Kent State, and it needs to be established from the start against a good UB defensive front. It’s a relatively young backfield, but the freshman combination of Terion Stewart and Trevon Raymore have shown promise.

Northern Illinois was able to have a little success against the Buffalo defense that’s not generating enough pressure into the backfield to be a problem.

What’s Going To Happen

There’s no passing game – Boston College transfer QB Matt McDonald has only hit 14-of-50 passes so far – and the defense hasn’t even been close.

Buffalo’s offensive line has been outstanding, and Bowling Green’s defensive front hasn’t. The Falcons will play better than they did in their blowout loss to Kent State, but they won’t hold up against the UB offensive balance.

Why Miami University Will Win

The defending MAC champs continue to be one of those Find A Way teams, but now it has more of an offense to help the cause.

AJ Mayer has taken over the quarterbacking gig, and he pitched a gem in the 38-31 win over Ball State, leading the way to 28 second half points in the late rally. He finished with 212 yards and three touchdowns, the running game did just enough to get by, and again, there was actually a Miami offense to worry about after so many struggling performances last year.

Even bigger was a huge day from a defensive front that lived in the Ball State backfield. The combination of Lonnie Phelps and Dominique Robinson combined for four of the team’s six sacks, there were enough big stops late to survive, and …

Why Buffalo Will Win

Buffalo’s offensive line is a rock.

The defense might have struggled with the Northern Illinois passing game in last week’s 49-30 win, but most of the yards came late after UB had already pulled away.

There wasn’t any pressure allowed in the backfield, Jaret Patterson was Jaret Patterson with 137 yards and two scores, and the offense was brutally efficient.

The five takeaways helped.

All the way around, this is the most talented team in the MAC, but …

What’s Going To Happen

That didn’t matter much in last year’s 34-20 loss to the RedHawks.

Miami has been a thorn in UB’s side in three of the last four seasons, but this year it’s in Amherst, and now there’s a real revenge factor in play.

Miami will seem like it has the ball for three hours, because it probably will – more like around 35 minutes – but that’s also because Buffalo will be just that explosive. Both teams will turn it loose into the backfield, but the Bulls will do a little more, and they’ll have a running game, the RedHawks won’t.

Why Buffalo Will Win

The Bulls are loaded at the skill spots. RB Jaret Patterson is the signature star, but the receiving corps gets just about everyone back in a very deep and very talented group.

Buffalo has the best team in the MAC coming into the season. It has the most offensive talent, the league’s best defense, a great pass rush, and the overall experience to rip through the season. It can all be taken apart, though, but NIU owning the clock.
