USA TODAY names Ohio State QB Justin Fields as Heisman co-favorite for 2020

According to USA TODAY, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is the co-favorite to win the Heisman Trophy in 2020.

Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields is back for another run at things in 2020. As a true junior, he’ll return behind a seasoned and talented offensive line, and skill position players that will give him plenty of options on the outside. Not only that, but he should be fully healthy after a leg injury made him less than 100 percent towards the tail-end of the year in 2019.

Simply put, he should be one of the most exciting and productive players to watch in college football next season. That’s all one year after already earning a trip to New York as a Heisman Finalist.

With all that’s going for him, maybe he can go to the Big Apple and actually win the whole thing next year.

In fact, according to USA TODAY, it sees Fields as the co-favorite for the bronze statue in 2020, along with Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Here’s what Paul Myerberg says about the OSU quarterback’s chances looking ahead.

The preseason Heisman field will have Lawrence and Fields — or Fields and Lawrence, depending on how you feel — and then a wide gap of space. Look for Fields to be even better as a second-year starter with the Buckeyes in 2020, though he’ll have less help in the backfield with running back J.K. Dobbins headed to the NFL along with several key receivers departed.

We’ve seen a lot of hype for players in the past that didn’t meet them, but with Fields in Ryan Day’s offense again in 2020, there’s good reason to think he’ll be right there again.

Ohio State went to Happy Valley and gave up 90 points to a Penn State basketball squad no doubt looking for revenge. The offense wasn’t horrible, but the defensive effort just wasn’t to the level it needed to be to walk into a tough place to play and be competitive.

Penn State owned the game from the time it got off the bus to the buzzer, and the Buckeyes are still in search of answers on how to be a consistent ball-club as the Big Ten season gets closer and closer to the midpoint of the season.

Ohio State wide receiver Austin Mack accepts invite to play in Senior Bowl

Graduating senior Austin Mack has accepted an invitation to join four other Buckeyes in this year’s Senior Bowl.

We’ve got another Ohio State graduating senior that’s accepted an invitation to play in the Senior Bowl. Wide receiver Austin Mack will be joining DaVon Hamilton, Malik Harrison, Jonah Jackson, and K.J. Hill in Mobile, Alabama next Saturday, January 25 to showcase their skills to NFL scouts and executives.

Mack has an unbelievable skill set, but was a bit besieged by injury during his time at Ohio State. Now he gets one more opportunity to show off on the national stage.

And don’t take it lightly. Many outgoing seniors have significantly improved their stock after taking part in the practices and workouts leading up to the game. Then there’s the game itself in a setting against other all-star caliber players. One only needs to look at the story of former Ohio State wide receiver Terry McLaurin who sold himself to the Washington Redskins largely because of what he did in last season’s event.

He has now separated himself as one of the more dangerous pass-catchers in the league as a rookie and doesn’t show signs of slowing down.

With five total Buckeyes now in the game, it could be fun to see some more college football before it all comes goes on hiatus until the Spring Game rolls around.

Ohio State men’s hockey wins second game of series against Notre Dame, takes over first place in Big Ten

The Ohio State men’s hockey team got a big win over Notre Dame Saturday. The win gave it sole-possession of 1st place in the Big Ten

The Ohio State men’s hockey team got a big win against Notre Dame Saturday. The result gave the Buckeyes three out of four total points on the weekend. It was a good finish to a series that began with a shootout Big Ten point after a regulation tie for the Irish on Friday night.

Notre Dame got the scoring going first with a goal with 8:29 left in the 1st period, but Quinn Preston answered a few minutes later to tie the score at 1-1 at the end of the first twenty minutes.

It didn’t take long for the Buckeyes to take the lead for good early in the 2nd period when Gustaf Westlund hit the back of the net just 1:43 into the period. From there, the Irish pressed and pressed but couldn’t get the equalizer through the almost 40 final minutes thanks to a whopping 28 saves by OSU goaltender Ryan Snowden.

With the win, coupled by a Penn State tie, the Buckeyes take over sole possession of first place in the Big Ten. OSU and Penn State have both played 14 games, but Ohio State has 26 points on the season to the Nittany Lions 25.

The Buckeyes now have a big two-game series against Minnesota next weekend on the road. It’ll need some good results to remain in first place in the conference.

 

Halftime Report: Ohio State’s struggles continue, down 15 at half to PSU

The Ohio State Buckeyes snapped their four-game losing streak, but they’re in trouble of starting another one, down at half to Penn State.

The Buckeyes finally broke their four-game losing streak against Nebraska a few nights ago. However, they’re again being tested on the road against an underrated Penn State team.

Entering half, the Buckeyes are down 15, 42-27. It’s not looking pretty either.

Outside of Kaleb Wesson, there really wasn’t much going for the Buckeyes in the first half.

Players like Luther Muhammad and Kyle Young really couldn’t find their footing offensively. D.J. Carton was also scoreless in the first half. Duane Wahsington Jr. had a few threes, helping keep Ohio State alive as well.

It was the team’s offense, not defense, that is worrisome as they scored under 30 points in the first half.

However, allowing over 40, one of the nation’s best defenses has been thrashed by Lamar Stevens. The Nittany Lions have four players over five points so far.

The Buckeyes just need to take this personally. The defensive effort is not there, having five fewer blocked shots at the half.

This game is certainly still in reach, but they’ll need to find the team that rattled off nine straight wins, including a 32-point victory over this same PSU team, in the second half.

East-West Shrine Bowl 2020: How and where to watch, listen, or stream

The annual East-West Shrine Bowl is set to take place in St. Petersburg, FL. Here’s all the television and radio information you need.

The annual East-West All-Star college football game is set to take place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida Saturday. The game has been a yearly event since 1925 and pits college seniors from the Western parts of the U.S. and Canada against those from the Eastern states and provinces (yes, Canadian players to participate in this thing).

And of course, if you’ve reached this page, you are more than likely an Ohio State fan, so we’ll remind you that the Buckeyes have three players taking part in all the festivities. Wide-receiver Binjimen Victor, offensive lineman Branden Bown, and safety Jordan Fuller all accepted invites to play in the game on the West roster (explain that).

Ohio State wrestling takes down No. 8 Wisconsin on the road

The Ohio State wrestling team took care of No. 8 Wisconsin on the road for a key Big Ten dual-meet victory.

The Ohio State wrestling team kept to its winning ways Friday night, getting another dual-meet win on the road against No. 8 Wisconsin 24-13. The Buckeyes took just six of ten matches, but piled up the bonus points to secure a top ten victory going away.

The Badgers got out of the gate quickly, taking the first two matches at the 125 and 133 lb. weight classes, but that changed quickly. Both Luke Pletcher and Sammy Sasso got major decisions at 141 and 149 lbs to quickly give Ohio State the dual-match lead.

From there, Elijah Cleary (157 lbs.), Kaleb Romero (174 lbs.), Rocky Jordan (184 lbs.), and Kollin Moore (197 lbs.) all scored victories. Jordan and Moore both wracked up bonus points with technical falls.

With the victory, Ohio State improves to 6-1 overall, and 2-0 in the conference. It’ll next take on Illinois Sunday at the Covelli Center.

Ohio State men’s hockey rallies in third period to tie Notre Dame

The Ohio State men’s hockey team used a three-goal 3rd period to gain a valuable point against Big Ten foe Notre Dame.

It looked awfully bleak for awhile.

Ohio State fell down big to Notre Dame, but had one heck of a three-goal third-period rally to snatch a tie away from the jaws of defeat.

The Fighting Irish got the scoring started at 4:02 of the first period, then added two more goals in the second to go up 3-0. The Buckeyes got on the board finally with 7:38 left in the 3rd period when Gordi Meyer lit the lamp. Austin Pooley added another Ohio State goal just over a minute later to make it a one-goal lead.

But then Notre Dame struck again with 3:43 left and it looked like the Buckeyes would go home without a point. But not tonight. OSU rallied to score two more when OSU emptied the net and Quinn Preston scored on a 6×4 Power Play with 1:37 left. Then, a few seconds later OSU remarkably tied it up at 4-4 when Gustaf Westland put one into the back of the net.

And just like that, Ohio State salvaged a point in a big matchup between ranked teams. The Irish got the extra Big Ten point when it scored with the sixth shooter in the shootout after a scoreless overtime period.

The two will be back at it again tomorrow.

Ohio State defensive end Chase Young was spotted working out with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Predator, meet the Terminator.

We’re not quite sure what the story is behind it all, but it appears as though Ohio State defensive end Chase Young has spent at least a little time pumping iron with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year and Heisman Finalist was videoed either taking tips or simply socializing with Schwarzenegger. The moment was captured while Young used a workout machine at a Gibson Performance Training near Young’s home in Capitol Heights, Maryland.

It’s not a long video, and we’d love to know what words were exchanged between Schwarzenegger and Young, but that will most likely stay between those two.
