Ohio State hoops slides back in latest AP college basketball poll

How far did OSU drop in the latest AP College Basketball Poll? #GoBucks

The Ohio State basketball team is licking its wounds after getting outplayed by an Iowa Hawkeye team that seemed to be more interested and engaged in winning a Big Ten basketball game on Saturday. It was the lasting memory of a week that also had a win against Minnesota at home, and the voters in the AP Poll responded.

In fact, in the latest AP college basketball poll, the Buckeyes slid down a few spots to No. 22, dangerously close to dropping out of the rankings altogether. More than that, the loss dealt a major blow to OSU’s chances of winning the Big Ten regular-season and entering the Big Ten tournament as one of the top four seeds.

But back to the AP Poll. We also saw the Buckeyes drop a little in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll, and we see some of the same teams up in the top ten as well. Gonzaga leads the way, followed by Arizona, Auburn, Purdue, Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, Villanova, Texas Tech, and Baylor rounding out the top ten.

Ohio State is next in action Monday night when it hosts the Indiana Hoosiers. Every game is important from here on out.

Ohio State drops just one spot in Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll

Where is Ohio State in this week’s latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports? #GoBucks

Despite a very lackluster showing against Iowa on Saturday, the Ohio State basketball team dropped just one spot in the latest Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. The Buckeyes were No. 18 last week and slid just one spot to No. 19 when the poll was released on Monday.

OSU started out the week with an impressive win against Minnesota at home, but then got outrebounded and outplayed in a loss against an offensive-minded Hawkeye ballclub to make the thought of a regular-season Big Ten championship less likely.

The top ten ahead of the Buckeyes include Gonzaga (1), Arizona (2), Kentucky (3), Auburn (4), Kansas (5), Duke (6), Purdue (7), Villanova (8), Texas Tech (9), and Providence (10).

Now for a look at the rest of the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll.

Ohio State basketball vs. Indiana: How to watch, listen, stream the game Monday

Ohio State welcomes Indiana to the Schott for a Big Ten battle. #GoBucks

After an underwhelming performance against Iowa on Saturday, Ohio State prepares for another tough Big Ten matchup when Indiana (16-9, 7-8) comes to town.

The Hoosiers took care of OSU in convincing fashion back in early January in Bloomington. However, IU has hit a skid as of late, dropping its last four contests with none of the four losses being particularly close. It goes without saying, but this is an important game for both sides as we approach the post-season.

Here’s everything you need to know to find the game.

Ohio State men’s tennis falls in ITA indoor semifinals

It was a good run. Now go get that outdoor title. #GoBucks

It was beginning to look like the No. 1 ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team was poised to take home the ITA indoor crown, but it was not to be. After winning its first 11 matches this year while only losing two points along the way, the Buckeyes weren’t able to get it done against TCU on Sunday, falling in a tight 4-3 affair.

Things did not start out well for the Buckeyes. They fell behind 0-1 early by not being able to secure the doubles point. They rebounded to take three-straight points in singles matches with Cannon Kingsley, JJ Tracy, and James Trotter all notching victories in their matchups, but lost the next two before James Van Emburgh lost in a close three-setter to give the Horned Frogs the 4-3 win.

Ohio State already has two ITA indoor national titles to their credit (2014 and 2019) but has yet to win that elusive outdoor title. That quest will now begin with a disappointing end in Seattle.

Michigan head coach Juwan Howard strikes Wisconsin assistant after loss

Unacceptable.

In an embarrassing scene, the end of the Michigan vs. Wisconsin basketball game on Sunday ended in a fight between both teams during the handshake line. And it all started because of the actions of Wolverines’ head coach Juwan Howard.

Howard was apparently not happy about Wisconsin calling a timeout with only 15 seconds left and already up by 16. After the game ended, a 77-63 Badgers win, the Michigan head coach appeared to walk away from the handshake line, but filed in at the end instead of leading it off like he normally does.

When he got to Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard, he pulled his mask down and reportedly told him that he’d “remember that,” referencing the timeout. Then, according to Gard, he put his hand on Howard to start to explain why he took the time out, trying to reset the 10 seconds players he just put into the game had to cross the ball past midcourt. Howard, apparently not happy about Gard touching him and voicing his opinion, then got heated and eventually reached towards one of the Badgers’ assistants, appearing to strike him with his open hand.

A hostile squirmish then broke out with Howard and other players needing to be restrained.

We like to poke fun at Michigan here on this free website, but this is far from acceptable from the head coach tasked with leading and providing an example for young men. No matter what happens in a competitive environment, showing restraint and being a good sport are at the core of every athletic department’s values.

Howard failed to act in a manner expected of him and you can expect disciplinary action to come down swift and hard, especially since it looks like he intended to strike another coach.

And it’s not the first time Howard has been involved in an altercation. Last season, he got in a war of words back and forth with Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon during a Big Ten Tournament game in Indianapolis.

We’ll be on top of this as soon as any further updates become available. This could be very bad for Howard and Michigan as the Big Ten and both universities work through a situation that the adults in the room should have been able to deal with civil humility rather than escalating things.

Two Ohio State players in Todd McShay’s post Super Bowl first round mock NFL draft

Where does Todd McShay have a couple of Ohio State players going in the first round of the upcoming NFL draft? Could you get on board with this?

Get ready.

You are about to see all the musings of the upcoming 2022 NFL draft increase to ear-piercing levels. Projecting all the shenanigans of the annual spectacle is now a year-round deal, but with the Super Bowl now over, almost every news outlet will turn their attention to the draft.

One of those news outlets is ESPN, and one of the best in the business is Todd McShay. He releases several of his mock drafts through the year, but things heat up right about now, and he just released his post-Super Bowl first-round mock NFL draft (subscription required).

Ohio State is on the shortlist of teams that continually churn out first-round NFL widgets, and it’ll be no different this year. According to McShay, there are again a couple of Buckeyes that will walk across the state on day one out in Las Vegas.

Here’s a look at the two Ohio State players that Todd McShay has going in the first round of the draft, and which teams will be selecting each.

Ohio State football’s place among the all-time rankings in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll

Needless to say, Ohio State is pretty high on this list when looking at the USA TODAY Coaches Poll historically. #GoBucks

There are two main historical college football polls that have separated themselves from the rest of the traditional polls. The Associated Press Top 25 is by and large the one that most folks like to look at, but right there with the AP Poll is the USA TODAY Coaches Poll. It has changed its namesake and sponsorship several times, now known as the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

Ohio State has been at or near the top more often than not, and now there’s some data to back up the Buckeyes being one of the best in the history of the poll thanks to Pete Fiutak of College Football News.

We’ve already looked at Ohio State’s place in the AP Poll (which is very similar), but according to the method used by Fiutak, the Buckeyes are also a monster in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll throughout history.

From College Football News:

CFN devised a scoring system giving every UPI/USA TODAY national champion 25 points, the No. 2 team 24, No. 3 23, and so on down to the bottom of the top 20 in the early years, and then it became the top 25 after USA TODAY took over.

So let’s see what the top 25 looks like. Here are the top 25 historical programs when it comes to ranking them based on appearances in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, starting from No. 25 down to No. 1.

Ohio State baseball 2022 schedule

It might still be cold outside, but the Ohio State baseball team is breaking the seal on the season. Here’s the 2022 schedule.

The boys of summer — er spring are back. The Ohio State baseball team has broken the seal on another season and the expectations for this year’s team seem to be middle of the road. With baseball though, we often see surprises and disappointments from preseason thoughts more than other sports, and maybe this years’ Buckeye squad can contend for things in the Big Ten and perhaps get to the postseason.

As usual, things start down south and eventually work their way into Big Ten country when the weather warms up. It’s a challenging schedule as always, and here’s how things layout as the Buckeyes look to elbow their way into things during the 2022 college baseball schedule.

WATCH: What Iowa head coach Fran McCaffrey said about Ohio State postgame

Watch what Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery said about Ohio State following his team’s victory in Columbus. #GoBucks

The Iowa Hawkeyes came into the Schott and outhustled and outexecuted Ohio State in a game that was big for both teams. The win elevates the postseason fate of Iowa, while the flip side for the Buckeyes means their Big Ten regular-season conference championship hopes are close to sliding off a cliff.

Hawkeyes head coach Fran McCaffrey was obviously delighted by his team’s performance and showed it during his postgame press conference. We always like to bring the opposing coach’s point of view to what they see from Ohio State, and McCaffrey was complimentary of both the Buckeyes and his own ball club.

If you missed any of his comments, we have them here thanks to Adam Jardy of the Columbus Dispatch. Watch the below and listen to McCaffery discuss the talent of the bigs for Ohio State, how important the battle on the glass was, how OSU likes to get downhill, and more.

Ohio State will next be in action on Monday when it hosts the Indiana Hoosiers. Getting back in the win column is almost a must to turn things around towards the postseason.

Top available college football transfer portal tight ends

Top available college football transfer portal tight ends #GoBucks

We have been keeping a close eye on the transfer portal and although it seems most of the transfer flurry has passed by, we are expecting more names to be added into the mix after spring ball. Hopefully, we don’t see any Ohio State guys add their name to the portal, but the reality of college football in 2022 shows it to be more likely than not.

The Buckeyes have added two transfers and both were to the defensive side of the ball, but it wouldn’t be crazy to see Ohio State add some offensive pieces if it can figure out the scholarship numbers game. With the departure of Jeremy Ruckert, the tight end position looks like a possible weakness for next season with Mitch Rossi and Joe Royer expected to be the major points in the rotation. The following are the top five available tight ends within the transfer portal.
