Why Indiana Will Win

The Hoosiers are making a late run – at least they’re trying to.

After coming up with a tough win over a strong Iowa, they won in a double-overtime thriller against a bad Northwestern to set things up for a possible huge win over the Buckeyes – this game really, really matters.

They’re not shooting all that well, but they’re moving the ball around extremely well, they haven’t been bad defensively, and they’re coming up with clutch plays, at least over the last two games. The Buckeyes don’t force enough mistakes to bother the IU backcourt, but …

Why Ohio State Will Win

Ohio State is doing just about everything right.

It won its last five games and eight of the last nine by shooting well, hitting enough from three, and not screwing up. What’s the biggest difference between last year’s team and this one? Last season’s version couldn’t stop turning the ball over, and this one is among the best in the country at not giving it away.

The team is playing well, it’s getting on the boards, and it’s been able to clamp down well from three – six of the last nine teams haven’t been able to hit 30% from the outside.

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State has its mojo working.

It’s a team looking and playing with extreme confidence, and with good reason. It’s coming up with the right plays through the last month and it’s been consistently strong.

Indiana will be feisty, and it’ll hit enough free throws to stay in the game late, but it’ll also turn the ball over the two extra times that Ohio State won’t.

Illinois (13-5) vs Nebraska (4-11) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Illinois Will Win

This has turned into a Final Four-caliber team over the last few weeks – at least, it has turned into a team that can make a deep run in the tournament. It’s a solid shooting team, and it makes up for the problems from three with a whole lot of rebounds at both ends.

The offense is moving the ball around well, it’s making the extra pass for easy shots, and the offensive rebounding is clearing everything up.

Nebraska, on the flip side, continues to struggle. It has yet to win a Big Ten game, the scoring has stalled, and even when it came up with a decent performance for 30ish minutes against Wisconsin, it was still a blowout loss.

But …

Why Nebraska Will Win

The Huskers can rebound.

That’s Step One against Illinois. If you get blasted on the boards, that’s it. Nebraska will hold its own on the boards, and should stop anything Illinois wants to do from the outside – this is a strong D from three, only allowing one team to hit 40%in the last nine games.

Will going on the road matter at all for the Illini? This is only the second time since January 7th and third time since Christmas that the team has been away from Champaign, and the Huskers are way overdue to catch a few big breaks at home, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Illinois shouldn’t have a problem.

The Huskers will hold up defensively just long enough to make the Illini sweat, but over the long haul the lead will slowly get bigger and bigger until it turns into a run.

Making things worse will be Nebraska on the free throw line it hasn’t hit the 50% mark over the last three games from the stripe.

Wisconsin (14-6) vs Nebraska (4-10) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Wisconsin Will Win

(Forgive this horrific opening line, but it actually fits …)

Wisconsin is consistent in its inconsistency.

(Told you. Very, very, very sorry for that.)

The Badgers aren’t able to come up with the same energy and the same production two games in a row, going win-loss-win-loss-win-loss since mid-January. And why? The offense has been okay in all the losses, but it’s the defensive side that’s not able to come up with the stops.

It couldn’t handle Penn State from the field, and then in the rematch a few games later it more than doubled up the takeaways and won easily.

Illinois nailed everything from the field and won in a walk a few days ago, but Maryland hit a wall in an easy Badger win.

You can’t get in the door against Wisconsin without hitting at least 40% from the field, and the Huskers have only done that twice in the last seven games.

Why Nebraska Will Win

Nebraska might be on a seven-game losing streak and have yet to take home a Big Ten victory, but it’s been great at stopping teams from hitting the three.

Wisconsin’s offense is the Wisconsin offense – it’s not going to walk on the floor and put 85 up on the board – but in this consistently inconsistent run, it’s been winning when hit makes at least 37% of its threes in the last six games, and loses when it makes fewer.

No one has made more than 38% of their threes against Nebraska in any of the last eight games and allowed more just once all year.

What’s Going To Happen

Nebraska might not score.

The Wisconsin defense will clamp down from the word go, it’ll grind the game down to a stop, and Nebraska will have a hard time getting to 65 points, much less 70.

Wisconsin won’t win by 12 like it did in the first meeting, but it’ll keep the recent pattern going with a win.

Iowa (13-6) vs Rutgers (11-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Rutgers Will Win

Has anyone made a bigger left turn this season than the Scarlet Knights? After losing five straight in a lost season, they came up with a win at Indiana on the way to a run of four straight wins to sneak back up into the top 25.

Where has it all gone right? The team is hitting just about everything from the field. It’s not doing enough from three, and it’s too inconsistent on the line, but it’s been able to connect on close to half of its shots, the defense comes up with a ton of steal, blocks, and forced mistakes, and when the threes fall, look out.

However …

Why Iowa Will Win

Let’s do a little Rutgers roll-slowing here.

It might have turned the season around, but a home win over Minnesota and a few victories over a few also-rans doesn’t mean it’s time to start planning for the Final Four just yet.

Iowa might be struggling way too much – losing a few tough fights as its season has gone the opposite way of Rutgers’  – but it’s still a high-scoring team, it’s good enough from the field to hang with the suddenly hot Scarlet Knights, and they’re way too good at moving the ball around to avoid screwing up.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Iowa finally stop the slide?

It’s not creating any sort of a break, the defense isn’t doing nearly enough in key moments, and this has turned into a bit of a momentum thing. It had the Indiana game potentially won, and let it slip away late.

Rutgers doesn’t hit well enough from three to keep up late. The first meeting was a 77-75 Iowa win on the road, and now it’ll finally stop the trend with a good enough performance at home to get by.

Ohio State (15-4) vs Maryland (10-9) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Buckeyes are in a groove. They’ve won four straight and seven of their last eight by getting hot from three, finding an attitude on the road, and with the offense ramping it up since an early January loss to Minnesota.

Part of the reason for the production is the lack of mistakes, the team gets to the free throw line a whole lot, and more than anything else, the shots are going down.

Maryland isn’t a big rebounding team and it doesn’t force enough mistakes to screw up the Ohio State O, however …

Why Maryland Will Win

For all of the great things the Buckeyes are doing, they don’t come up with steals, they’re not great at coming up with a slew of assists, and they’re not all that great at stopping teams from three.

Maryland is a quirky team that doesn’t score a whole lot and keeps games close, but can it get hot from the outside at home? This isn’t a great shooting team, but it’ll grind the game down to a stop at times and it has to connect from three just enough to stay in it. The OSU defense should let that happen.

What’s Going To Happen

How much do you believe in patterns?

Both teams have a way of coming up with big wins when no one is expecting it, but now it’s expected out of the Buckeyes. However, Maryland has been in a pattern of win-loss-win-loss over the last six games, and now it’s due for a win again.

What does that mean? The team adjusts, it finds some extra gear to do something positive, and at home, this is a must-win moment for a team whose season is slipping away.

Ohio State will pull this off – it has won its last four on the road – but it’ll be a low scoring fight.

Here are five things about the 2021 Big Ten football schedule that matter including who misses the big teams from the other division, the non-conference analysis, the one big difference in this year’s slate, the winners and losers, and starting out with …

5.  Who gets the rested teams?

The Big Ten does a terrific job of not letting any one team’s schedule get loaded up with games against teams that get a break. If possible, everyone would love to have an extra week to rest and prepare for Ohio State, Wisconsin, or Penn State, but that doesn’t happen.

Ask Alabama over in the SEC what it’s been like over the years to seemingly get everyone with fresh legs.

Every team gets at least one week off, and every team has at least one total layup against an FCS team or against a lightweight FBSer. What teams then get hit with the relaxed opponents?

Again, the Big Ten does a good job of this. It’s relatively fair.

Iowa (13-5) vs Indiana (9-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Iowa Will Win

It’s been a rough run over the last few games for the Hawkeyes, but the team is still able to score, the outside shooting is great, and the problems are almost all on the defensive side.

There are plenty of offensive rebounds on the rare times when the shooting is off, and the threes are dropping. If Indiana is off at all – the team is usually miserable from three and doesn’t do enough on the boards to matchup with the Hawkeyes – then Iowa has the firepower to put this away with a big run.

However …

Why Indiana Will Win

The Hoosiers didn’t have any problems scoring a few games ago in a shocking 81-69 road win over the Hawkeyes.

Iowa isn’t averse to playing defense, but it’s just not very good at it. Just about everyone is able to score at will with 80 being the magic mark for the league’s worst scoring D.

Iowa is 1-5 when allowing 80 points or more, and three of those losses came in the last four games.

Everyone is getting fat from three against this defense with Indiana, Illinois and Ohio State having no problems whatsoever coming up with points when needed.

Indiana doesn’t normally have the scoring pop, but it’s at home, so …

What’s Going To Happen

Being in Simon Skjodt has been a problem for the Hoosiers. In their last five games they’re 0-3 at home and 2-0 on the road, but Iowa isn’t having a whole lot of luck anywhere because of that D.

The relentless Hawkeye offense that had one of its worst shooting days of the season against IU the first time around won’t be that bad again. The defense will continue to give up way too many easy baskets and won’t force enough mistakes, but the offense will make up for it.

Purdue (12-7) vs Northwestern (6-9) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Northwestern Will Win

The defense has to stop Purdue’s outside shooters.

This is a wildly inconsistent Boilermaker team that’s been able to get by from time to time when the threes aren’t falling, but when they’re off they’re really off.

How off? Purdue has failed to hit more than 25% from three four of the last five games and four of their last six.

Northwestern might struggle at guarding the three, but the defense isn’t all that bad, it’s been okay at times over the last few games at keeping things from getting out of hand, and the team is okay from three.

Why Purdue Will Win

Northwestern doesn’t score enough, and it doesn’t make life easy with second chance points – offensive rebounds are too often a rumor.

Purdue might not always shoot well, but it rebounds just about everything, it’s good enough on the offensive boards, and it can play a little defense, too.

There have been a few off days throughout the season, but for the most part, the team has tightened up defensively – it hasn’t allowed more than 72 points in any game in 2021.

What’s Going To Happen

This isn’t going to be the game when the Northwestern offense gets healthy.

Purdue is struggling a bit, and it has a way of letting teams hang around a bit too often, but it ends up winning. It’ll get out to a good early start and Northwestern won’t get hot enough from the outside to come back in the second half.

Wisconsin (14-5) vs Illinois (12-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Can the Badgers put together two decent shooting games in a row, at least from the outside?

They don’t have to be lights out from the field to win games – they know hot to clamp down when they have to – but threes matter. They were dead-cold on the road against Penn State and were never in it, and then in a rematch a few days later hit half of their threes and won easily.

They have yet to lose this year when hitting 40% from three, and only lost once when hitting 33% or better – Illinois is one of the worst teams in the Big Ten at defending from three. The Illini D has allowed 40% or more from there in four of the last five games and five of the last seven.

Why Illinois Will Win

Illinois continues to be outstanding on the boards. They skewed the stats with a ton of big boarding games over the first half of the season, but they really are just that good at going to grab misses.

This isn’t a bad rebounding Badger team, but there aren’t a slew of offensive boards – which is what happens when you hit your shots – and for all of the great things the defense does, it doesn’t take the ball away. Illinois moves the ball around too well and should be able to avoid a slew of big mistakes for easy UW points.

What’s Going To Happen

Illinois will be fine at home.

Wisconsin has alternated win-loss-win-loss-win over the last five games, and again, it’s all about whether or not it’s hitting from the outside. Illinois is shooting too well, too good on the boards, and it doesn’t turn the ball over enough to give away a close fight.
