All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

TCU (0-0) vs Duquesne (0-0) Game Preview

Why Duquesne Will Win

The Dukes are coming off a strong spring FCS session, going 4-1 with a great passing game, one of the best pass defenses in the country, and with the high-powered potential to make this a game.

Just about everyone is back on both sides, starting with the combination of QB Joe Mischler to WR Cyrus Holder dangerous enough to worry about.

Mischler isn’t all that big, but he’s efficient, experienced, and accurate. Holder is a 6-4, 205-pound downfield threat who averaged over 21 yards per catch with five touchdowns in the five spring games.

The TCU secondary will eventually be fine, but it has to replace NFL-caliber safeties Trevon Moehrig and Ar’Darius Washington and …

Week 1 College Football Schedule, Predictions

Why TCU Will Win

Don’t worry about the TCU defense. It’ll get the job done.

The offense that was inconsistent throughout 2020 gets back nine starters including QB Max Duggan, a do-it-all playmaker who should have a big season – and a big game – as long as the offensive line gives him time to work.

The Duquesne defense might be experienced, but it doesn’t have a big-time pass rush and it doesn’t force enough takeaways to matter.

As long as the TCU offense doesn’t make a slew of mistakes to give the Dukes a slew of easy scoring chances, there shouldn’t be a problem because …

What’s Going To Happen

Duquesne has very good, very efficient FCS offense, but it’s not high-powered enough to come out and hang points on the board in bunches. It’s the type of team that’s good on third downs on both sides of the ball, but that’s not going to be enough.

The Horned Frog defense has been brilliant in the last several games against FCS teams – a 2016 59-41 shootout against South Dakota State aside – and it’ll hold up in this just as the offense sharpens up.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Baylor (0-0) vs Texas State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Texas State Will Win

The Bobcats should be fun.

They might have gone 2-10 last season, and the defense certainly didn’t do much to help the cause, but the offense moved fast and improved by leaps and bounds.

Ten starters are back, the offensive line got a boost from the transfer portal, and the passing attack should be even more dangerous, and there should be enough pop to keep this from getting out of hand.

The defense also returns loaded with veterans, but …

Week 1 College Football Schedule

Why Baylor Will Win

The Texas State defense still has a long, long way to go.

The offense will have its moments, but the Bobcat D that allowed close to 500 yards per game is about to get hit very, very hard by a revamped Baylor attack that should be a whole lot stronger.

New offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes comes in from BYU and should get the passing game going. The receiving corps has promise, and the offensive line should be more consistent after a rough run.

The O doesn’t have to be amazing in this because the D should take over. The Bears get just about every key tackler back, head coach Dave Aranda and the staff know how to put together a defense, and …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

The Texas State offense will put up yards, but it’ll have a tough time putting the biscuit in the basket.

The Bobcats will work with energy, and they should come up with a few nice scoring drives, but Baylor will wake up on both sides of the ball and start to show just how good it might be this year after a full offseason to work.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oklahoma State (0-0) vs Missouri State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Missouri State Will Win

Bobby Petrino’s team was one of the nice surprises of the FCS spring season, going 5-1 before getting knocked out of the playoffs with a loss to North Dakota.

The offense was effective at getting the job done when it had its chances, the defense was strong, and the pass rush and ability to get into the backfield – especially on third downs – turned the program around.

It wasn’t always smooth – the offense has to do a far better job in a variety of ways, like in pass protection – but the D is going to be a problem for the Cowboys, starting with pass rushing terror Kevin Ellis at one end.

Week 1 College Football Schedule

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense should be far sharper and far more productive than the 2020 version.

One of the hot teams going into last year, it was more than fine with an 8-3 run, and the attack certainly wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t the unstoppable machine it was supposed to be.

There’s a little bit of work to do at wide receiver, but the backfield is loaded with great options, Spencer Sanders is a veteran quarterback, and the offensive line should be good enough to handle the Bear pressure.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Missouri State’s offense wasn’t awful, but it doesn’t have the pop to push past a Cowboy defense with a secondary that should shut things down.

This is the game for OSU to get the defensive line in place, and the Bears won’t have the ability to take advantage of the work behind done. Missouri State will score, but it won’t be able to do enough to keep up.

The Cowboys will get hot early, score on its first few drives, and there won’t be a whole lot of drama after halftime.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Texas Tech (0-0) vs Houston (0-0) Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

It’s been an interesting coaching tenure so far for head coach Dana Holgorsen.

His first year went in the tank, he worked to get everything ready for 2020, and then 2020 went 2020. Now the parts are there with a veteran offensive line paving the way for a deep and talented group of backs, and with Clayton Tune a rising quarterback with the ability keep up the pace if and when this gets into a shootout.

And the defensive side should be even better.

The Cougars get almost all the starters back, almost all of the key tacklers return, and this should be a good enough group to at least come up with a few key stops. They’re not going to be a brick wall in this, but holding serve late might be enough.

Week 1 College Football Schedule

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Welcome to Tyler Shough.

The Oregon transfer quarterback has the skills to be a first round draft pick if everything comes together for a Texas Tech offense that has to be more Texas Tech-like.

Like Houston, the Red Raiders have a good group of running backs behind a veteran line, but if Shough really is that good, here’s where he has to show it.

Defensively, few teams in college football benefited more from the super senior rule. Because of it, instead of being hammered by personnel losses, the Red Raiders return 11 of the top 13 tackles and they’re all grown up men. It starts with one of the best linebacking corps the program has had in a long, long time, but …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Can Texas Tech actually play defense consistently well?

The D wasn’t too awful last year, but it wasn’t good enough to overcome an offense that struggled to be devastating. As long as the quarterback situation is settled and fine – that means Shough has to be great – the O will work.

Against Houston, Texas Tech will keep things moving a bit better. The midrange passing game will work, the running game will be more than adequate, and Shough will overcome two interceptions with a few great scoring drives.

Houston will keep up for a while, but it’ll stall on two key second half drives to fall off the pace.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Texas (0-0) vs Louisiana (0-0) Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

The machine still has most of its parts.

The Ragin’ Cajun offense that averaged 423 yards and 34 points per game – and beat Iowa State last year – gets back everyone but its two star running backs Elijah Mitchell and Trey Regas.

However, QB Levi Lewis is a veteran going into his fifth year, the offensive line should be the best in the Sun Belt, and the style of play can take over games.

The Texas defense still has a long, long way to go to be elite.

The new coaching staff can only do so much in an offseason, and it needs to crank up a run D that should have a word of problems if Louisiana is able to do what it does so well.

But it’s not just the offensive side that makes Billy Napier’s team so strong.

The Ragin’ Cajun defense gets back almost all of the top tacklers from a group that was brilliant at taking the ball away and was among the nation’s most efficient teams against the pass.

However …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Texas Will Win

Texas has some big-time guys ready to go, and it starts with head coach Steve Sarkisian.

This isn’t going to be 2020 Alabama right away – if at all – on offense, but the former Tide offensive coordinator knows how to make an O move, new UT OC Kyle Flood is brilliant at coaching up offensive lines, and there isn’t a whole lot that has to be done for an attack that averaged 475 yards and 43 points per game.

Bijan Robinson has the upside to be among the nation’s top running backs, the line is loaded with veterans, and the passing game should be fine with – most likely – a good group of young receivers ready to shine.

No, the D might not be elite quite yet, but there’s size, a ton of experience, and a potentially great back eight around LB DeMarvion Overshown and a wonderful group of safeties.

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

What’s Going To Happen

Let’s do a little bit of roll slowing on Louisiana.

It’s a dangerous, well-coached team with a great group of parts – it can absolutely win this game. However, it’s going to take a perfectly pitched game to do it.

Yeah, the Ragin’ Cajuns beat Iowa State to start 2020. They gained just 272 yards, were helped in a huge way by going +2 in turnover margin, and came up with both a kickoff and a punt return for a touchdown.

It’s not like the offense worked.

Texas can’t make the same mistakes the Cyclones did. It can’t turn the ball over, there can’t be a slew of breakdowns, and it has to play a full 60 minutes – the Ragin’ Cajuns will keep on coming.

It’s going to be a fight for the Longhorns, but the defense will rise up after giving up a few early scoring drives, and the offense will click in the third quarter after giving away a few turnovers early.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Iowa State (0-0) vs Northern Iowa (0-0) Game Preview

Why Northern Iowa Will Win

The Panthers had a disappointing spring FCS season going 3-4 with all four losses by a grand total of 14 points – each one by seven points or fewer.

The O struggled to keep the chains moving, but the defense allowed just 15 points and 285 yards per game, the run defense was a rock, and the pass rush and tackles for loss are going to test the Cyclone offensive line.

No, UNI might not crank up a high-octane offense, but it doesn’t make a whole lot of mistakes – it’s not going to give away a slew of turnovers. However …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Iowa State Will Win

Yeah, the Northern Iowa offense – it’s not going to be able to run on the Cyclone defensive front.

The Panther offensive front struggled in pass protection and didn’t consistently do enough for the ground game that averaged just three yards per carry.

Iowa State’s offense might have the national stars – at least in the backfield with QB Brock Purdy and RB Breece Hall – but the defense is the anchor with most of the top tacklers returning to the Big 12’s best run D.

Northern Iowa has to forget about the ground game, but bombing away on the Cyclone secondary won’t be easy. However …

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State’s defense will give up a few passing yards.

It wasn’t really a bend-but-not-break thing last season, but the secondary allowed 237 yards per game and didn’t generate enough big plays.

Northern Iowa only threw two touchdown passes in the seven spring games.

Iowa State hasn’t always had it easy against UNI – losing in 2007, 2013 and 2016, and barely surviving in a 29-26 win to open up the 2019 season – but it’ll be tune-up time for Iowa.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

West Virginia (0-0) vs Maryland (0-0) Game Preview

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Maryland offense hasn’t exactly been known for its consistency so far in the Mike Locksley era, and now it’s going up against a West Virginia defense that should be – at least statistically – among the best in the Big 12.

Fourth in the nation in total D last year – and first in the Big 12 – the Mountaineer defense under head man Neal Brown knows how to lock things down. The secondary is going to be fantastic – the Mountaineers allowed a nation-low 160 yards per game – and the line can get into the backfield.
