How to watch: Thunder vs. Blazers

Advice and prediction

The Thunder are on the second game of a back-to-back. After wrapping up last night’s game around 5:30 p.m., they had to travel to Portland and settle in before managing any basketball activities.

In their third game in four days, I’d be worried that Oklahoma City will be a bit weary after so much play and travels. Portland is also on the second night of a back-to-back, but they didn’t play between the Jan. 18 loss to the San Antonio Spurs and the Jan. 24 win over the New York Knicks. They should still be relatively fresh.

What is promising is that Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been monstrous in the paint and Blazers center Enes Kanter is not particularly known for his defense. Gilgeous-Alexander could go off; but, as Friday showed, even a 30-plus-point performance doesn’t always equal a win.

I’m not confident enough the Thunder can hold off both Lillard and McCollum while finding enough energy to attack the boards, defend the post and score for themselves. I wouldn’t bet on them, though they have certainly played up to competition at other points this year.

Prediction: Blazers 111, Thunder 104

The Thunder (6-8) lost to the Clippers (12-4) 120-106 on Friday. Oklahoma City trailed by as many as 27 before cutting the lead as low as 10 in the second half but Los Angeles wouldn’t relinquish any further. How to watch: Thunder vs. Clippers

Advice and prediction

Why to bet the Thunder: Oklahoma City outscored the Clippers by four over the final three quarters on Friday, lost by 14, and were one missed free throw with 17 seconds left away from hitting the spread. Head coach Mark Daigneault has shown that he’s good at making halftime adjustments, and with a full day in between games, he has more time to institute an updated plan. They could lose by nine instead of 14 and a better would walk away with cash.

Why not to bet on the Thunder: Los Angeles might’ve simply started to coast after going up by 27 in the first half. Their blowout win didn’t come just because they made more shots; they dominated the boards, made 24 of their 25 free throw attempts, and only gave the Thunder six free throws over the first 43 minutes of the game, before Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Lu Dort combined for seven attempts in the final five minutes. Those areas — defense and rebounding — are replicable for a team like this, especially with Al Horford’s continued absence

I wouldn’t bet on the Thunder, particularly with the struggles of their bigs, but for those willing to take a risk, covering the spread would bring in good money.

Bad beat: Thunder miss covering spread with missed FT on final possession vs. Clippers

The Oklahoma City Thunder were 13.5-point underdogs to the Los Angeles Clippers. They lost by 14 — and missed a free throw on their last possession.

Talk about a bad beat.

The Oklahoma City Thunder entered the game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night as 13.5-point underdogs on BetMGM. Early, it looked like there was no chance they’d cover the spread, as they trailed by 18 at the end of the first quarter and as many as 27 in the second.

But late in that second quarter, they started rolling, and cut the lead to as little as 10 in the third quarter. Suddenly, bettors had interest.

Oklahoma City couldn’t get closer than 10, but with 25 seconds left, they trailed by 15. Wing Lu Dort got a defensive rebound and took the ball upcourt himself. He then drove and drew a foul on a layup attempt with 16.7 seconds to play.

Both free throws would cover the spread.

Bettors didn’t have to hold their breath for long. He missed the first before sinking the second.

That was the final real possession of the game, as the Clippers walked the ball up and ran out the clock on the next.

Dort finished with 19 points, so the missed free throw also cost him what would have been his third game in a row with 20 or more points.

Close, but not quite. If you bet on the Thunder this season, especially against a team like the Clippers, you know the risk you’re taking. There’s a reason they say the house always wins.

The Thunder (6-7) were blown out by the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday. Their attempt to get back to .500 will be a difficult one given the stature of Los Angeles.

The Clippers (11-4) are on a five-game win streak that has elevated them near the top of the Western Conference. Kawhi Leonard and Paul Goerge have combed to average more than 50 points per game during that stretch.

How to watch: Thunder vs. Clippers

Advice and prediction

Last game, I wrote the Thunder would be a risky but worthwhile bet against the Denver Nuggets if you believed they’d lose by less than 10. This game, I’d stay away. The Clippers are one of the hottest teams in the league, Kawhi Leonard and Paul Goerge can contain OKC’s best players, and Al Horford remains out after his wife gave birth. I’m not confident that the Thunder, who average the fourth-fewest points scored and are dropping in defensive rankings, can prevent a blowout against the Clippers, who are top-10 on both sides of the ball and are averaging almost 125 points per game during this win streak.

Prediction: Clippers 120, Thunder 101

The Thunder (6-6) have not played since Friday night, the comeback victory against the Chicago Bulls in which they traled by 16 with less than five minutes to play. Their Sunday game against the Philadelphia 76ers was postponed.

The Nuggets (6-7) have underachieved so far this season, but Nikola Jokic is averaging a triple-double and will be a legitimate MVP candidate if Denver fights its way back into the upper echelon of the Western Conference.

How to watch: Thunder vs. Nuggets

Advice and prediction

It was ready to say don’t bet the Thunder on this, especially with Al Horford presumed out once again for personal reasons, but the +9.5 spread with that money line … for those who are looking to take risks, this would be the game to do it.

Despite Jokic putting up MVP numbers, the Nuggets are 6-7 and have lost two of the last three games. If you think Lu Dort can contain Jamal Murray, who is averaging about 20 points per game, you may think the Thunder have a chance to cover.

Denver’s offense is a top-5 in the league but the defense is among the bottom third. The Thunder’s defense has been solid but offense is near the bottom of the league.

In all honesty, I’d say not to bet the Nuggets. Those odds don’t present strong enough winnings to take that risk that Denver wins by double-digits. I also can’t recommend taking the Thunder, but for a bettor willing to take a leap and hoping for a strong game from an OKC team that hasn’t played since Friday, this probably isn’t the worst risk you’ve taken.

How to watch: Thunder vs. Nets

Advice and prediction

The Thunder will have a legitimate chance if Curry and Embiid are both out, which Sixers Wire reports is the case. Curry is hitting 59.5% of his 3-pointers this season, an absurd mark even by the standards of his family. Embiid is shooting 57% from 2 and 39.4% from 3, both of which are the best of his career.

Without those two on the second night of a back-to-back, the 76ers may struggle.

If Oklahoma City hopes to get the win, the team will have to limit Tobias Harris, who is listed as 6-foot-8 and having an improved season from last year. He’s hitting 43% of his 3s and shooting 50% overall from the field.

Tyrese Maxey has also had a very strong start to his career. He has posted double-digit points in each of the last six games. Then, obviously, Philadelphia still has star Ben Simmons, who is always a triple-double threat.

Even if center Al Horford does not suit up against his former team, the Thunder have a chance to beat the 76ers.

I’d lean under on the over-under. The Thunder offense hasn’t been good but their defense has been solid, and with the Sixers on a back-to-back without two of their best scorers, they might not be able to get going like they normally would.

How to watch: Thunder vs. Bulls

Advice and prediction

The Thunder are actually getting some respect from the bettors this week. This is the closest they’ve been to being favored all season, and given as the Bulls have a worse record and haven’t played since Sunday, there’s reason why.

It’s not an easy bet on the Thunder, though. Otto Porter Jr. (back) and Lauri Markkanen (calf) are probable to play against OKC. Zach LaVine has been insane this year, scoring more than 30 points in four of his last five games, and the guards took advantage of Oklahoma City in the preseason.

Darius Bazley’s status was unclear as of Friday afternoon after suffering an ankle sprain against the Lakers.

Al Horford will be back on the court after missing the game against the Lakers for rest purposes.

Chicago is averaging the fifth-most points per game, but also giving up the third-most points. The Thunder’s defense has been average overall compared to the league, but their offense is near the bottom. With the Bull’s suspect defense, OKC could have a chance to break out a bit.

That’s what you would be relying on if you were to choose the over. Chicago averages 116 points per game, and if they hit that, the Thunder would need 109, which they’ve hit in only four of their 11 games. They haven’t faced a defense with as low a rating as the Bulls, though.

Oklahoma City looked very good in its wins over the New Orleans Pelicans, New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets, and with Horford back and Lu Dort set to defend LaVine, they could win again and get back to .500 on the season.

How to watch: Thunder vs. Spurs

Advice and prediction

I’d like to issue a formal apology to the Thunder. After I had a relatively strong start with my predictions, I was way off against the New York teams the last two games. If I remain far off base here, I’ll take a couple games off predicting to re-evaluate.

With that said, this is a game the Thunder could take. The Spurs are 18th in offensive rating and 20th in defensive rating. They’re 19th in 3-pointers allowed and last in rebounds, according to Lineups. The Thunder have been taking a high number of 3s. If they can make them and crash the boards, they’ll be well off.

Defensively, the Spurs don’t have a player performing at the level of Kevin Durant, Julius Randle, Zion Williamson or Brandon Ingram, all of whom the Thunder have played during this winning streak. Lu Dort and Darius Bazley have had plenty of practice over the past week to take on the Spurs.

The Thunder have played well defensively and shown pop offensively. It’ll take continued success from the bench, but they could win.

How to watch: Thunder vs. Nets

Advice and prediction

Kevin Durant has averaged more than 30 points in the games he has played against the Thunder since departing in 2016, and I don’t expect less from him after missing the last three games due to coronavirus protocols.

His Achilles injury doesn’t appear to have changed him as a player, as he is still posting 28.2 points per game.

Oklahoma City played very sound defense against the Knicks and, with Kyrie Irving and Spencer Dinwiddie out, the team can focus hard on Durant. Neither Lu Dort nor Darius Bazley has matched up against Durant; how will they fare?

I don’t expect the Nets, who are third in the league in scoring, to fall to the Thunder, who are second-to-last. I’d take the under and Brooklyn on the spread.

Prediction: Nets 116, Thunder 103

The Thunder are 2-4, and their last two losses have been by 28 points and 33 points, respectively. That 33-point loss was against the Pelicans.

New Orleans (4-3) have won two of their last three games, and the only thing that prevented them from winning three in a row was an Indiana Pacers 6-0 run in the final 25 seconds of the fourth quarter to send the game in overtime, which they eventually won.

How to watch: Thunder vs. Pelicans

Advice and prediction

The Thunder have had some unfortunate timing in facing the Pelicans. That first game, the 33-point loss, came on the heels of a Pelicans loss to the Phoenix Suns in which New Orleans trailed by as many as 40 points before losing by 25. In the game against the Pacers, the Pelicans became the third team in league history to lose after leading by at least six points with 25 seconds or fewer remaining, according to ESPN.

Because of that, I expect the Pelicans to again play with fire and beat the Thunder. Oklahoma City has not been good offensively this season, while the Pelicans have scored at least 113 in each of the last three games.

I’m taking the Pelicans at -8.5 and the under.

Prediction: Pelicans 110, Thunder 99
