LSU (2-3) vs Arkansas (3-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why LSU Will Win

Arkansas is vastly improved from the disaster of the last few years, but there are still glaring holes that need fixing over the rest of the season, if not next year, too.

The offensive line isn’t keeping anyone out of the backfield. The skill parts have been able to function, but anyone with a halfway decent pass rush is able to live behind the line and slow things down against an attack that stinks on third downs and is last in the SEC in time of possession.

For all of its faults, LSU leads the conference in tackles for loss with a steady enough pass rush to be a problem. The overall defense might be struggling, but the front line is disruptive.

Why Arkansas Will Win

LSU is just freaking weird.

There’s still more than enough talent to be decent, but everyone left the party and what’s left is a whole mess of parts that just aren’t coming together and clicking.

QB Myles Brennan is likely out for the year, but TJ Finley has big-time upside to build around. He needs time to work, he needs a running game to help the cause, and the entire offense needs the defense to stop getting bombed on so there’s not so much pressure.

How many times did Arkansas throw for over 200 yards last year? A bunch, but it was all in September – the O failed to get there over the last seven games. This year’s offense has yet to throw for fewer than 200.

Feleipe Franks been terrific, the defense is taking the ball away as well as any team in the conference, and unlike LSU, the parts are meshing just well enough to be competitive against everyone but the Floridas and Georgias of the world.

2020 LSU isn’t in that world.

What’s Going To Happen

Last year LSU was favored by over 40 points against the Hogs, and now …

The game against Alabama last week didn’t happen, and it didn’t matter.

LSU’s offense will work well enough to make this a fun shootout, but Arkansas is getting back head coach Sam Pittman, it’s been good at home, and it’ll come up with the late rally to pull this off. Franks will be the difference – he won’t make the mistakes that LSU’s backfield will.

Why Arkansas Will Win

Turnover margin, turnover margin, turnover margin.

What’s been the biggest overall difference this year for the Hogs? They’re better coached, the offense is working, and the defense has been among the best in the SEC against the pass, but it’s been the turnover margin that’s helped the cause the most.

The program is -20 in turnover margin combined over the last four years, and this year’s its +8 so far. In the three wins, the Hogs are +9 with 13 takeaways. In the three losses, they’re -1 with no takeaways in the last two defeats. Florida doesn’t have big problems with turnovers, but it’s given it up at least once in every game with a pick six last week against Georgia.

Arkansas has only allowed 300 passing yards once this year – in a win over Mississippi State – and has 12 picks, but …

CFN College Football Experts Picks

Why Florida Will Win

Kyle Trask is putting up 2019 Joe Burrow-like numbers after five games, and is now the first SEC quarterback ever to throw four touchdown passes in five straight games. On fire, the passing game has been dominant, averaging 369 yards per game with 22 touchdowns and three picks from No. 11.

The defense has stepped it up a bit, too, after having major problems against Ole Miss and Texas A&M in the first part of the season. The run D stuffed Missouri and Georgia – after one big early run – over the last two weeks, and the offense has been too good and too efficient for anyone other than A&M to keep up.

The Arkansas offense has been solid, but it doesn’t have the firepower to keep up. But …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas head coach Sam Pittman not being around as he recovers from COVID matters, but this is the Feleipe Franks game.

The former Florida quarterback returns, and while the Hog starter might not be playing as well as Trask, he’s been outstanding – hitting 67% of his passes with 14 touchdowns and three picks, with two of those coming in the opener against Georgia.

He’ll be good, and the Arkansas defense will be good enough keep this closer than the Gators might like. That was a BRUTAL game against Georgia last week, and it’s going to show – Florida will look sluggish compared to an energized Arkansas.

But the Gator passing game will come through as the game goes on, a few big scoring throws from Trask will ease the tension, and the Arkansas pattern of L-W-L-W-L-W will continue.

Tennessee (2-3) vs Arkansas (2-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Tennessee Will Win

The Arkansas secondary hasn’t been great so far. It’s not a disaster and it’s not getting gouged too badly, but it allowed 200 yards or more in four of the five games. It doesn’t give up a whole lot of big plays, and it was a takeaway machine against Mississippi State and Ole Miss. As long as the Tennessee passing game takes the easy short-range passes and doesn’t take any chances, it should be okay.

The Hog offense isn’t miserable, but it’s having a hard time on third downs with its quick pace, and it’s among the worst teams in the country at controlling the clock.

However …

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Why Arkansas Will Win

Tennessee can’t convert on third downs. It’s dead last in the SEC converting just 26% of the time, and as bad as Arkansas is in the time of possession battle, the Vols are even worse, keeping the ball for just 26:21 a game.

The offense is working. The defense might be having a few problems, and the O hasn’t been consistent, but against Texas A&M the Hogs pushed past both 220 yards rushing and receiving.

Granted, a lot of those yards came in comeback mode, but it was the team’s best running day of the season, and now it’s going against a Tennessee defense that’s okay, but hasn’t been a brick wall.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Tennessee offense just isn’t working well enough. The running game is too inconsistent, and the passing attack hasn’t hit 200 yards in three of the last four games. It’ll be a dead-even game throughout with the Hog D doing just enough against the run to actually win the time of possession battle.

Ole Miss (1-2) vs Arkansas (1-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Ole Miss Will Win

The offense is really, really good.

The Rebels have ramped it up right away with an attack that’s not only devastating, but air-tight – it has only given the ball away once so far.

The running game is second in the SEC, the passing attack is averaging 381 yards per game, and the team is second in the nation behind UCF in total offense. It’s all clicking, QB Matt Corral has been amazing, and Lane Kiffin and the new coaching staff have everything working.

Arkansas has played well so far – it’s been far, far better than any reasonable expectations – but the offense is struggling on third downs. Don’t hold serve against Ole Miss, and you’re screwed.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Arkansas Will Win

What has improved so much so quickly under new head coach Sam Pittman?

The offense is still just okay. There isn’t much of a running game, and the passing game doesn’t do a whole lot deep. However, the defense has been terrific at taking the ball away – at least it was against Mississippi State – the pass rush has been fine, and the team is finding ways to hang around games.

No, the O hasn’t been amazing, but that Ole Miss D might fix that.

The Rebels are last in the SEC in total defense, scoring defense, run defense, third down stops, and on and on. Alabama punted the ball away in the first quarter and it lost a fumble – that was it.

The Rebel defense couldn’t stop the Tide on touchdown drive after touchdown drive. Arkansas doesn’t have that type of talent, but there’s enough to keep up the pace. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Arkansas isn’t going to do anything to grind out the clock.

Neither team seems to care at all about the time of possession battle, but Arkansas needs to somehow keep its offense on the field as much as possible.  Ole Miss might not be doing anything defensively, but Arkansas doesn’t have enough punch to keep up.

These two can’t play boring games this year, and nothing will change in Fayetteville.

Auburn (1-1) vs Arkansas (1-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Arkansas Will Win

So how is this happening? How did the program that was so miserable for so long pull off an upset over a Mississippi State team that throttled the LSU defense the week before? How did it hang around with Georgia for a half?

Turnovers and more turnvoers.

The offense hasn’t exactly been air-tight with five turnovers, but the two takeaways against Georgia helped and the four against Mississippi State were killers.

The Hogs have to be better than that against an Auburn offense that isn’t screwing up. If Arkansas can be at least a +2, and if QB Feleipe Franks can be as good as he was against the Bulldogs – 71% for 212 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions – this can be close. But …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Auburn Will Win

Arkansas isn’t moving the ball well enough.

The offense sputtered on third downs against Georgia and only converted on 5-of-14 chances against Mississippi State.

Auburn’s defense is having problems on third downs, and the team as a whole is settling in, but the offense isn’t going to make the big mistakes Arkansas needs. Defensively, the front needs to get past a rough day against Georgia, but Arkansas isn’t running for over 200 yards on this group.

At some point Anthony Schwartz is going to break out – the speedy receiver is only averaging 8.8 yards per grab – and Seth Williams is about to bounce back after being held to just 34 yards by Georgia.

The Auburn passing game will work again.

College Football Expert Picks, Predictions: Week 6

What’s Going To Happen

It’s one of the more fascinating games of the early SEC season. Is Arkansas for real? Can Auburn show that last week was just a bad day against an elite Georgia team?

Tiger QB Bo Nix might not be accurate enough, and he’s not getting enough help from the running game, but the offense will be efficient and the defense will keep finally start to come up with third down stops and get off the field.
