Cardinals HC candidate Aaron Glenn to have 2nd interview with Colts

Glenn had interviewed with the Cardinals once and was a candidate to get e second interview here.

The Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts are the only two teams remaining in the NFL without a head coach. They are both competing for the some of the same candidates.

Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is one of them.

He interviewed with the Cardinals once for their vacant head coaching job to replace Kliff Kingsbury, fired after the team’s 4-13 2022 season.

According to CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones, he is getting a second interview with the Indianapolis Colts.

The Cardinals had interviews with several candidates up through last week before interviewing Sean Payton. After Payton’s interview, they scheduled interviews this week with three new candidates — Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo and Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan.

As it has been a while since Glenn had his interview with the Cardinals, it might be the Cardinals have moved on. However, if they intend on bringing him back in, it might be too late, depending on how things go with the Colts.

Cardinals unfairly criticized for facilities by former player

A.Q. Shipley suggested on the Pat McAfee Show that the Cardinals’ temple facility is run down and outdated, which is not the case.

The Arizona Cardinals lost out on hiring Sean Payton as their next head coach. He is expected to agree to terms on a contract with the Denver Broncos. To do so, the Broncos agreed to trade their 2023 first-round pick and 2024 second-round pick in exchange for the right to sign Payton (Payton retired from coaching after 2021 but is still under contract with the Saints through 2024) and the Saints’ 2024 third-round pick.

Payton was in Arizona for a daylong meeting and interview with the Cardinals last week. He spent hours at the team facility in Tempe.

It was suggested on the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday that one reason why the Cardinals were unable to land Payton was the state of the team’s practice facility.

Former Cardinals offensive lineman A.Q. Shipley said the building was long overdue for an upgrade and had not changed since Bruce Arians retired as head coach after the 2017 season.

Shipley was with the team from 2015-2019.

That doesn’t tell the story.

The Cardinals’ team facility, weight room and locker room have not changed since Arians left. This is a fact.

However, there were major upgrades before Shipley got there.

The Cardinals opened their practice bubble in 2013. That cost the team $4.2 million.

They expanded the weight room in 2015. Team strength and conditioning coach Buddy Morris called the 9,000-square-foot weight room “the Taj Mahal of weight rooms in the NFL.” It nearly doubled the size of the weight room previously.

That same offseason, they upgraded the locker room, added a cafeteria and a hydrotherapy area. They redid meeting rooms. They expanded the facility by 92,000 square feet and invested more than $15 million into the facility. It was considered a front-of-the-line facility at the time.

That was less than 10 years ago.

Shipley is right. Nothing has been changed since Arians left.

That is because things were upgraded before Shipley got there.

McAfee criticized the Cardinals because the team meeting room was the same place as the media conference room.

That is also not completely accurate.

The team meeting room is an auditorium that is rarely used for press conferences.

The media conference room is a different, smaller area.

Payton didn’t get hired by the Cardinals either because he liked the Broncos’ situation better and because Denver was willing to give up the draft capital necessary to the Saints to hire him.

It wasn’t because Payton thought the Cardinals’ facilities were subpar.

The Cardinals have been in the same building since the 1990s and the outside of the building looks like it. However, everything inside is much different.

For Shipley, who spent several seasons with the team, to suggest that things were old and outdated, is simply incorrect.

POLL: Should the Cardinals have pulled the trigger on trade for Sean Payton?

It would have likely taken their 2023 second-round pick and 2024 third-round pick.

The Arizona Cardinals brought in former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton last week for a daylong visit and interview for their head coaching vacancy. Whether or not they wanted to hire him, it appears they will no longer have that chance.

Payton is closing in on a deal to become the Denver Broncos’ next head coach. To be able to hire him, as Payton, despite retiring from his post with the Saints last offseason, is still under contract through 2024, the Broncos had to make a deal with the Saints.

Pending a contract with Payton, the Broncos will give up their 2023 first-round pick, the 29th selection in the draft, and their 2024 second-round pick in exchange for the rights to hire Payton and the Saints’ 2024 third-round pick.

Had the Cardinals wanted to hire Payton, a potential trade with the Saints could have been this, as proposed by Kyle Odegard.

The Cardinals would have had to give up their second-round pick this year (No. 34 overall) and their 2024 third-round pick to be able to hire Payton.

Of course, they would have had to make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the league and likely would have had to concede a level of control of the final roster and personnel decisions.

But should the Cardinals have made the move to hire him?

Broncos agree on trade with Saints to hire Sean Payton as HC

The Broncos agree to give up this year’s first-round pick and next year’s second for the right to hire Payton and the Saints’ 2024 third-rounder.

The Arizona Cardinals appear to be losing out on former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton. He and the Denver Broncos are closing in a deal to make him the replacement for Nathaniel Hackett.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Broncos agreed to a deal with the Saints to allow them to hire Payton.

The Broncos agreed to trade their first-round pick this year — No. 29 overall — and a 2024 second-round pick in exchange for the ability to hire Payton and the Saints’ third-round pick in 2024.

Payton retired from his job with the Saints after the 2021 season but was still under contract through 2024 so the Saints had to allow the hiring to happen.

The trade is pending a deal is done between Payton and the Broncos, but that is expected to happen.

Payton was being considered by the Cardinals and had a daylong visit with team owner Michael Bidwill and general manager Monti Ossenfort last Thursday.

Assuming Denver and Payton come to terms on a deal, the Cardinals will be left to choose from the many candidates they have interviewed and will interview this week.

DeMeco Ryans named Texans’ new HC

Ryans was a candidate for the Cardinals’ vacancy but canceled his interview before the divisional round of the playoffs.

The Arizona Cardinals had their eye on former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans as a potential replacement for Kliff Kingsbury as their head coach.

Now he is the head coach of the Houston Texans, the team announced Tuesday.

Ryans had an interview scheduled for the Cardinals and their head coaching vacancy the Saturday before the 49ers’ 19-12 divisional round win over the Dallas Cowboys. It was one of four interviews scheduled for that day. He completed two and canceled the others, including the one with the Cardinals.

He reportedly gets a six-year deal.

He is the second new head coach hired this offseason. The Carolina Panthere hired Frank Reich to be their new head coach last week.

The Denver Broncos are closing in on Sean Payton, while the Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts still are conducting interviews.

NFL salary cap going up by more than $16M in 2023

The 2023 salary cap will be $224.8 million, giving the Cardinals more than $14 million in cap space before the offseason begins.

The salary cap is going up in 2023 in the NFL. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport, the league informed teams that the 2023 salary cap will be $224.8 million.

It was $208.2 million in 2022.

It is an increase of $16.6 million.

The cap has increased every year except for 2021, when it went down because of the 2020 pandemic season in which fans for the most part could not attend games.

In 2020, the salary cap up was $198.2 million. The COVID adjustment in 2021 was down to $182.5 million. That went up to $208.2 million this past season and will go up to $224.8 million next season.

For the Arizona Cardinals, it means they have about $14.5 million in cap space this coming offseason before making any roster moves to increase that amount.

Jonathan Gannon will return to Eagles as DC in 2023 despite HC interest from teams

The Cardinals have interest in the Eagles DC but it seems unlikely they will get to interview him.

The Arizona Cardinals have added a few names to the list of candidates they are considering to full their vacant head coaching position. One coach they had interest in is Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, per a report on Sunday.

However, it does not appear that they will even get to interview him.

Following the Eagles’ 31-7 victory in the NFC Championship Game to send them to the Super Bowl, Gannon told Philadelphia’s FOX 29 he wasn’t going anywhere.

“Philly’s keeping me,” Gannon said after being told that perhaps it was his last home game coaching for the Eagles. “Good, bad or indifferent, I’m staying here.”

Gannon was a finalist for the head coaching job for the Houston Texans and the Cardinals and Denver Broncos have shown interest.

However, 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans is expected to be named head coach of the Texans.

The Cardinals have interviews lined up for the next three days, beginning Tuesday. They will interview New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka Tuesday, Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo on Wednesday and Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan on Thursday.

Bengals OC Brian Callahan to interview with Cardinals Thursday

Callahan is one of three new candidates to replace Kliff Kingsbury.

After the Arizona Cardinals reportedly “reset” following their daylong interview with former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton for their head coaching vacancy, they have added new candidates to the fray.

After they meet with New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka Tuesday and Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo Wednesday, they will interview Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

Callahan has been Cincinnati’s offensive coordinator since 2019. After being 30th and 29th in scoring in 2019-2020, the Bengals were seventh in scoring each of the last two seasons. Cincy made it to the Super Bowl last season and lost in the AFC Championship Game this season.

Before his time as offensive coordinator for the Bengals, Callahan coached quarterbacks for the Raiders in 2018 and the Lions in 2016-2017.

From 2010-2015, he was with the Denver Broncos as a coaching assistant, offensive quality control coach and offensive assistant.

Bengals DC Lou Anarumo to interview Wednesday for Cardinals’ HC job

The Cardinals will have a first interview with three new candidates. Bengals DC Lou Anarumo’s interview is Wednesday.

After the Arizona Cardinals reportedly “reset” following their daylong interview with former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton for their head coaching vacancy, they have added new candidates to the fray.

After they meet with New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka Tuesday, they will interview Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport.

The Bengals were eliminated by the Kansas City Chiefs 23-20 on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game.

Anarumo has been the Bengals’ DC since 2019. Before that, he coached defensive backs for the Miami Dolphins 2012-2017 and the New York Giants in 2018. He was the Dolphins’ interim DC in 2015.

The Bengals were 16th in yards allowed, sixth in points allowed and seventh in rush defense.

Giants OC Mike Kafka to interview for Cardinals’ HC job Tuesday

The Cardinals have added another candidate to their head coaching search.

The Arizona Cardinals have added some new candidates they will consider for their vacant head coaching job. They have at least three new ones they wish to interview.

One is New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka.

According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, Kafka will interview for the job Tuesday.

Kafka is currently a candidate for the Indianapolis Colts’ head coaching job and interviewed with the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans.

Kafka was offensive coordinator for the first time last season under Giants head coach Brian Daboll. The Giants were 18th in total offense, 15th in scoring but fourth in rushing offense.

He helped quarterback Daniel Jones had the best season of his career. He had a career-low 1.1% interception percentage. He also had a career-low in fumbles and a career-high in both passing yards and rushing yards.

Before his one season with the Giants, he was on Andy Reid’s coaching staff for the Kansas City Chiefs from 2017-2021, first as an offensive quality control coach, then as Patrick Mahomes’ quarterback coach from 2018-2021, adding passing-game coordinator to his title in 2021.
