Unless something wild happens, Air Force is in the frontrunner seat to earn a New Year’s Six bid. They are ahead of Tulane in the rankings and will very likely remain there with zero losses. The official College Football Playoff rankings are still a few weeks off to know for sure.

The Falcons do take on rival Navy this weekend and will do so without starting quarterback Zac Larrier for this week and maybe more. That is the one big thing in the way of them staying undefeated.

For now, Air Force is pegged to the Fiesta Bowl and will be a pain in the butt matchup for some team like Oregon, Texas or Penn State.

Week 5 is in the books and it seems like more and more teams are slowly securing their spot in a bowl lineup. We make a big shift for a potential New Year’s Six matchup and swap out Fresno State for Air Force.

While the Bulldogs arguably have better wins with a pair of power conference wins, the Falcons have looked more dominant all year — outside of the 13-3 win over Sam Houston State.

Currently, FPI gives just six teams with a better than 50% chance to make a bowl game but odds are and history suggest seven will make a bowl game, maybe even eight.

A new bowl team?

Week 2 is over and it provided some interesting results for bowl contention teams. Fresno State needed overtime to top Eastern Washington. A good FCS team but the Eagles were not even in the top 25 of the coaches poll at their level.

That close win knocks out the Bulldogs for a potential NY6 game. It is not out of the question for the Mountain West champion to be there but that slot might be in the hands of Tulane, despite its loss to Ole Miss.

Wyoming is 2-0 and a solid win over Texas Tech so that helps their chances, and Fresno State is not out of it either.

However, the Cowboys take on the Longhorns and that will be another big boy chance to provide an upset over Texas. At this moment, Wyoming is a four-touchdown underdog.

The college football season is here! There were three Week 0 games that happened within the Mountain West, and also some conferences that have matchups for the bowl season.

There will be weekly bowl projections throughout the year and Week 0 is no different, despite the small sample size.

The MAC and Pac-12 are bowl matchups for the league and while it would take a big downfall for USC to be in the Los Angeles Bowl, there is a chance they could end up in a New Year’s Six game to face a Mountain West team.

Changes are minimal this week but we will keep updating these matchups after every game week.

The college football season is just around the corner and now is a great time to predict the bowl matchups for the Mountain West teams.

The best option is making the College Football Playoff or making it as the Group of Five representative for a New Year’s Six bid which goes to the highest ranked champion from these five conferences.

The Mountain West has five guaranteed bowl tie-ins, an alternate bowl game, and this year there are four at-large bowl games that are against a Group of Five team.

Basically, if a team from this league gets to bowl eligibility they will go to a bowl game.

Teams are getting closer

The season is getting closer to an end which means more and more teams are becoming bowl eligible. Two that are on the cusp are Utah State and UNLV.

The Rebels have four wins with an easier schedule by playing Hawaii and Nevada, but the road tilt against the Warriors is tricky for many teams, plus it’s a rivalry game as well.

Utah State has to play two teams that might just be in the conference title game with hosting San Jose State and then going to Boise State on a Black Friday morning game to wrap up the season.

Six Mountain West teams have reached bowl eligibility, two more can still get there: Utah State and UNLV.

Remaining schedules:

USU (5-5): vs. SJSU, at Boise
UNLV (4-6): at Hawaii, vs. Nevada

If those two teams do get to bowl eligibility that would mean the Mountain West would have eight teams going bowling. The odds of one getting shut out seem very unrealistic because last year a pop-up bowl game was created to allow all bowl eligible teams to play in a post season game.

ESPN’s Football Power Index gives the Rebels a 51.5% chance to get to six wins and Utah State 44.3% chance to do the same.

Boise State and Wyoming are the first two teams from the Mountain West to earn their six wins to become bowl eligible. Then there is Air Force and San Jose State are next in line with five wins.

Fresno State is looking more and more like a lock with four wins and now has Jake Haener back in the lineup after missing time while injured. It seems like a formality they will get to six.

UNLV also has four wins and with quarterback Doug Brumfield now back in the fold at practice and that will go a long way in getting the Rebels closer to bowl eligibility.

UNLV's starting center Leif Fautanu tells me having Doug Brumfield back in practice gives the Rebels that "swag" back that they need on offense.

San Diego State is close is well with four wins but they have a tough schedule the rest of the way with games but three are at home vs. UNLV, Air Force and San Jose State. Then they have New Mexico on the road.

A fifth win seems for sure and the game vs. the Rebels this week depends if UNLV gets Brumfield back. If the QB is out then expect the Aztecs to get the win.
