Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger promises a whole new offense under OC Matt Canada

Ben Roethlisberger gives everyone hope in this new Steelers offense.

Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers offense became monotonous and predictable and eventually caught up to the team late in the season. But the addition of new offensive coordinator Matt Canada promises lots of changes and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger backed that up when he spoke to the media on Tuesday.

According to Roethlisberger, this season’s offense will be “nothing that you’ve seen in the past.” The Steelers couldn’t get former offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner out the door fast enough when the season was over and if you had any doubts about just how bad he was, look at the fact he is still unemployed.

Canada was brought in last season to be the team’s new quarterbacks coach but everyone understood the long game. Canada was the head coach at the University of Maryland and his philosophy is much more in line with the modern NFL than anything Fichtner ever did. The key will be getting the team up to speed as Roethlisberger noted it is taking extra study time to work everything out.

Chase Claypool says Steelers WR are stacked but would love Julio Jones

Chase Claypool would love for the Steelers to get a No. 1 wide receiver.

[mm-video type=video id=01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72-0e8a028622854a567b55538f55449bf4.jpg]

If there is one positional unit on the Pittsburgh Steelers we aren’t worried about it’s the wide receivers. But according to Chase Claypool, despite the group being “stacked” he’d love to have them add Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones according to TMZ.

I get that in the context of a forced interview while Claypool was just trying to get into his car but does he really want Jones on the roster? Truth be told, Pittsburgh doesn’t have a WR1 on the roster at all.

Claypool has the most potential to be the top guy but the truth is Claypool, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Diontae Johnson are all more of WR2 types who fill very specific roles on the offense.

The Steelers would never make a trade for Jones and it would be better if one of these guys would step up and take a leadership role on the depth chart. Unfortunately, all three of these guys have chosen to train on their own so far this offseason.

Fans love to connect every potential star to the team but I would hope no one really thinks Jones is realistic for Pittsburgh.

Steelers EDGE Alex Highsmith used NFL draft experts as motivation

Pressure is on Alex Highsmith this season.

[mm-video type=video id=01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72-0e8a028622854a567b55538f55449bf4.jpg]

Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith was pressed into starting duty as a rookie in 2020 when Bud Dupree tore his ACL. His performance was strong enough to give the Pittsburgh Steelers coaches confidence in him to be the opening-day starter opposite T.J. Watt.

But many NFL draft pundits weren’t so convinced and many had edge rusher among the team’s top draft needs, even going so far as to mock an edge to the Steelers in the first round. Highsmith said this motivated him to work even harder in the offseason.

My thoughts? Whatever it takes. Highsmith has some big shoes to fill so anything he can pull from to help get him there is fine by me. Highsmith only got one sack in his five starts and the Steelers did very little to address the position in the offseason aside from sixth-round pick Quincy Roche.

Steelers among most vulnerable defending division champs

The road back to the AFC North title won’t be easy for the Steelers.

[mm-video type=video id=01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72-0e8a028622854a567b55538f55449bf4.jpg]

Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers were able to hold off the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens for the AFC North thanks to their 11-0 start. It was all for nothing as the team collapsed down the stretch and their season culminated with a 48-37 loss to the Browns in the first round of the playoffs.

NFL Network has ranked the most vulnerable reigning division champs and to no one’s surprise, The Steelers checked in at No. 2 overall and the most vulnerable in the AFC.

We saw a precursor to the changing of the guard taking place in this division in the playoffs, when the Browns rolled to a stunning 48-37 victory over a Steelers team that crumbled following an 11-0 start to the 2020 season. Cleveland returns the majority of a team (with some key additions on defense) that looks like a bona fide Super Bowl contender, led by reigning Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski. And let’s not forget about the Ravens, who continue to enjoy superpower status under Lamar Jackson and could look even more imposing in 2021, with pass catchers Sammy Watkins and Rashod Bateman rounding out the offense. As for Pittsburgh, Ben Roethlisberger still has good football left in him at age 39 — but I worry about that offensive line (which returns only one proven starter, David DeCastro) and a defense with suspect depth.

In a highly competitive AFC North, it is all about getting better every season. Are the Steelers a better team right now than they were last season? This is highly debatable but you can certainly see where the Browns and Ravens improved their rosters this offseason. The Steelers have a brutal schedule ahead of them and repeating as AFC North champs feels like a longshot.

Steelers score top DL duo in NFL according to PFF

The Steelers still have one of the best fronts in the NFL.

[mm-video type=video id=01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72-0e8a028622854a567b55538f55449bf4.jpg]

No matter how much the Pittsburgh Steelers offense struggles, the defense, more often than not, is there to pick it up. A huge reason the Steelers defense remains so competitive year after year is defensive linebacker Cam Heyward and EDGE T.J. Watt.

Pro Football Focus ranked Heyward as the No. 3 defensive lineman in the league and Watt the No. 2 edge rusher. This makes them the top defensive line tandem in the league.

Watt finished the 2020 season with 53 tackles and 15 sacks and was easily one of the best all-around defenders in the NFL. Heyward’s stats were somewhat more modest with only four sacks to go with 54 tackles but his ability to play the run and force plays to his teammates is what really makes him special

Steelers EDGE Cassius Marsh talks his role on defense in 2021

Cassius Marsh is ready to go for the Steelers this season.

[mm-video type=video id=01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72-0e8a028622854a567b55538f55449bf4.jpg]

Last season, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed edge rusher Cassius Marsh off of the Indianapolis Colts practice squad but he saw very few opportunities on defense. That could change a great deal in 2021 as Bud Dupree has moved on in free agency and left the cupboards pretty bare at outside linebacker.

In a recent interview, Marsh talked about his role for the upcoming season and his expectations.

I’ll be competing for a rotational pass rusher position, and you know, that’s the third outside backer, but I’m going in with the intention to do whatever the team needs me to do- special teams roles, defensive roles … I pretty much go into every season with the same mindset. When I get an opportunity to make plays and help the team, that’s what I do. Whatever role the Steelers need me for is the role that I’ll play.

Despite only 14 career sacks in seven seasons, Marsh is the top reserve edge rusher on the depth chart behind T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith. Pittsburgh did spend a sixth-round pick on Quincy Roche but Marsh should see a nice jump in snaps this season.

Steelers still have veteran options at cornerback in free agency

There are still some very good veteran cornerbacks on the market for Pittsburgh to consider.

[mm-video type=video id=01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72-0e8a028622854a567b55538f55449bf4.jpg]

If the NFL season started today, the Pittsburgh Steelers would have a starting cornerback tandem of Joe Haden and James Pierre with Cameron Sutton at the slot cornerback. Not a terrible grouping but there is always room for improvement when it comes to the Steelers defensive secondary.

But the Steelers still have options. The top guy on everyone’s list is Steven Nelson. The Steelers cut Nelson early in the offseason to save salary cap but he remains unsigned. We could say Nelson is just being selective but the truth might be he doesn’t plan to play for anyone but the Steelers and is simply enjoying a summer off without any sort of team-related workouts. Nelson’s return to the team would be seamless.

Another interesting option is veteran Richard Sherman. Sherman is currently on the market and seems to be in no rush to find a new team. However, Sherman made it public he wouldn’t be opposed to playing for the Steelers but Pittsburgh hasn’t contacted him.

Sherman has been in the league 10 seasons and in his prime was one of the best cornerbacks in the league. Sherman might not be quite the player he was when he was at his best but you cannot deny he’s an upgrade over Pierre.

The Steelers roster is in a signficant state of flux this offseason. They really cannot afford to take too many steps back on defense with so many questions on offense. But if you have to pick between Nelson and Sherman, which would you want?

Steelers should take a shot at signing OT Morgan Moses

Morgan Moses would be a perfect addition to the Steelers.

[mm-video type=video id=01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72-0e8a028622854a567b55538f55449bf4.jpg]

Less than a week ago, we talked about how Washington Football Team offensive tackle Morgan Moses would make an interesting trade option for the Pittsburgh Steelers. But now they don’t have to.

The WFT released Moses on Thursday and this makes things even more interesting for the Steelers. One of the things that limited trade options for Moses and the WFT was his $7.75 million salary. Now, with Moses a free agent he is free to sign wherever he wants and the salary is negotiable.

The Steelers currently have just over $9 million in salary-cap space with their top three NFL draft picks left to sign. But this shouldn’t be a problem if they want to add Moses to significantly improve their offensive line.

Moses has 97 career starts at right tackle and has been the WFT starting right tackle since the start of the 2015 season. Pittsburgh is a great option for Moses with a vacancy on their offensive line and a team poised for a playoff run.

Was Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger’s 2020 season a failure?

Cast your vote for Ben Roethlisberger’s 2020 season.

[mm-video type=video id=01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72/01f5hmvqq34rep29wz72-0e8a028622854a567b55538f55449bf4.jpg]

First off, I am not asking if the 2020 season of the Pittsburgh Steelers was a failure. It absolutely was. An abject failure on all fronts. After starting the season 11-0, the team fell apart down the stretch and took a beatdown in the first round of the playoffs.

But compared to other NFL quarterbacks, was Roethlisberger’s season a failure?

First, the numbers. Roethlisberger started 15 games, only sitting out the final week of the season when playoff seeding was decided. In those 15 games, Roethlisberger threw for 3,803 yards, 33 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Roethlisberger completed 65.6 percent of his passes and finished with a 94.1 quarterback rating.

The one number that does stand out as the biggest negative is yards per attempt. Thanks to a non-existent run game and questionable offensive line the passing offense was relegated to an almost horizontal passing game with very little vertical threat.

But I’m passing the question off to all of you. Cast your vote and tell us how you would characterize Roethlisberger’s 2020 season.
