Cardinals sign young punter to ‘futures’ deal

They add punter Nolan Cooney for 2022 and will able to evaluate him and see if he could be Andy Lee’s replacement.

The Arizona Cardinals have not announced the move but have a signed a young punter for 2022. According to the NFL transaction report on Tuesday, the Cardinals signed punter Nolan Cooney.

Cooney played collegiately at Syracuse and went undrafted in 2021. He was the team’s holder for three years and punted the final year in 2020.

He led the nation in punts and punting yards and averaged 44.8 yards per kick.

He spent the 2021 offseason with the New Orleans Saints.

Cardinals punter and holder Andy Lee will be 40 year old next season and is scheduled to become a free agent.

At this point, it would be unreasonable to think that Cooney will be the Cardinals’ punter next season, but it does bring in a player for next year to evaluate and potentially develop.
