Can the backups keep the ship afloat if Allen goes down?

This was anything but a normal offseason for the NFL. For a rookie such as Jake Fromm, could not work with teammates leading into the training camp period. Thus, it seems the curve is a bit steeper for all rookies. Essentially, this makes it even more difficult to challenge for the No. 2 spot behind Allen

It might be another season of Matt Barkley sitting behind Allen. While his breakout game in 2018 against the New York Jets inspired some confidence in backup’s abilities, his closing game against the Jets in 2019 was far from impressive.

It’s a small sample, but there should be a bit of concern. What if Allen goes down with an injury? He missed time during his rookie year with an elbow injury, and even though he played all 16 games in 2019, he still took his licks when rushing the ball. He loves to bust out of the pocket and run at will.

If he were to miss, say, three or four games, could Barkley keep this team afloat? That could be the difference between a playoff spot and golfing. And along with injury, every NFL team has COVID-19 to worry about. The Bills, at times, have only rostered two quarterbacks. Because of this pandemic, Buffalo might exercise caution and keep three.
