Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson played his worst game of the season so far on Thursday, tossing two interceptions in an ugly 12-9 loss to the Indianapolis Colts at home.
Wilson’s second interception was especially egregious because it came late in the fourth quarter when the Broncos appeared to be on the verge of winning the game. Then, in overtime, Wilson missed a wide-open KJ Hamler and forced the ball to a well-covered Courtland Sutton on fourth down. That pass fell incomplete, sealing a loss for Denver.
After game, Wilson accepted blame for the defeat.
“It’s very simple. At the end of the day, I have to be better,” Wilson said. “I have to play better. This team, this defense played their butts off tonight. … At the end of the day, throwing two interceptions can’t happen. Can’t happen. I let the team down tonight.”
Despite the awful performance and disappointing loss, Wilson is still optimistic about the team’s outlook for the rest of the season.
“The good thing is that one thing I know about myself is [that] I’m going to respond. I don’t know any other way. I always believe in myself. I always believe in this team. I believe in what we can do. I believe in what I can do.”
Wilson went 21-of-39 passing on Thursday for 274 yards with no touchdowns, two turnovers and four sacks. He has now completed 59.4% of his passes for 1,254 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions through five games. That’s not good enough from a QB that just signed a massive contract extension this offseason.
Wilson has to be better. The entire offense needs to be better.
“We’re all still together focused on trying to do whatever it takes,” the QB said. “It starts with me, and I’ll make sure that I do that.”
