2022-2023 College Football Playoff Projections
We had the projected USC loss to Utah factored in last week’s College Football Playoff projections along with Michigan’s expected win over Penn State. Tennessee beating Alabama, though, changes the dynamic.
Sort of.
The call last week was that Alabama would lose once along the way, still get to the SEC Championship, and then lose to Georgia. That doesn’t change now.
For the moment – knowing there are going to be wild twists and turns – the call is that Tennessee loses to Georgia and goes 11-1. Michigan loses to Ohio State and goes 11-1. Georgia and Ohio State are in, and so is 12-1 ACC champion Clemson – there’s going to be some strange misfire somewhere, like at Notre Dame.
And then there’s the part everyone continues to overlook.
The College Football Playoff committee will almost certainly take a 12-1 Pac-12 champion over an 11-1 Tennessee or Michigan … maybe.
The committee has never left out a 12-1 Power Five conference champion, and it’s still possible UCLA could win out and be 13-0. USC or Oregon could absolutely run the table, so for the moment, nothing changes.
