Alabama softball goes 1-1 on Friday in Clearwater

Alabama split wins on Friday with a 9-1 win over USF and then a 7-0 loss to UCLA.

After an impressive day 1 at the St. Pete/Clearwater Elite Invitational on Thursday with wins over Liberty and No. 1 Washington, Alabama split wins on Friday with a 9-1 win over USF and then a 7-0 loss to UCLA.

In game one against USF, Alabama pitcher Sarah Cornell gave up five hits  and had two strikeouts in her 5 innings on the mound as she threw 68 pitches.

Offensively, the win was led by Alexis Mack who had three hits and two runs against USF.

In game two of the day against UCLA, Alabama struggled early and never got the momentum back. Alabama pitcher Montana Fouts struggled early on and was pulled in the second inning after she walked 5 and hit another.

Savannah Woodard and Bailey Hemphill were the only two players for the Crimson Tide to get a hit against UCLA pitcher Megan Faraimo.

Here’s what head coach Patrick Murphy had to say about his Tide’s performance on Friday:

“I was really pleased by the bounce-back of Sarah Cornell against USF. She kept us in the game until Tow gave us some breathing room with her home run. We gave UCLA too many free opportunities early on and they took advantage of them. Whoever wins the battle of free passes usually comes away with the win.”

Alabama will finish it’s last game on Saturday against No. 16 Oklahoma State at 9:30 a.m. CT.
