A look back at Tennessee’s 1974 victory over Clemson

Tennessee notches comeback victory over Tigers in 1974. Here’s how it went down that day.

No. 6 Tennessee (10-2, 6-2 SEC) will play No. 7 Clemson (11-2, 8-0 ACC) in the Capital One Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Florida.

Kickoff is slated for 8 p.m. EST Friday and ESPN will televise the matchup.

It will mark the 20th meeting between UT and the Tigers. The Vols have an 11-6 advantage in the all-time series and the teams have played to a pair of ties in the rivalry that dates back to 1901.

Clemson and Tennessee last played in the Peach Bowl in 2004 with the Tigers emerging victorious, claiming a 27-13 victory in Atlanta.

Each game week, Vols Wire will look back at one of Tennessee’s upcoming opponent.

This installment will revisit the Vols’ 29-28 victory over the Tigers on Oct. 26, 1974, at Neyland Stadium.

The Tigers and Tennessee were embroiled in a close game with Clemson holding a 28-21 lead in the fourth quarter when legendary UT quarterback Condredge Holloway scored a late touchdown to pull the Vols to within, 28-27.

Tennessee head coach Bill Battle then opted to attempt a two-point conversion.

Holloway set up to run the option but was chased back to the 20-yard line. He threw a desperation pass to Larry Seivers to score the game-winning points.

The Vols would finish 7-3-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the SEC.
