Alabama knocks off No. 2 Georgia in an all-time instant classic

Alabama’s Ryan Williams’s late-game heroics lift Kalen DeBoer to first SEC victory.

Wow, it’s hard to describe what we just witnessed as the Alabama Crimson Tide knocked off No. 2 Georgia in a game-of-the-year contender and instant classic.

Alabama sprinted out to a 28-0 lead early in the second quarter but got a bit complacent with the four-score lead as the Dawgs clawed back in the second half to take a 34-33 lead with 2:31 to go in the fourth quarter. Then on the first play of Alabama’s next possession, true freshman Ryan Williams made the play of the game on a 75-yard touchdown reception over two Georgia defenders. Milroe found Germie Bernard on the ensuing two-point conversion to give Alabama a 41-34 lead.

Georgia got the ball back with about 2:15 and a chance to tie the game. They drove into the Alabama red zone before true freshman CB Zabien Brown picked off Carson Beck for the third time on the Tide.

Kalen DeBoer’s first SEC victory was always going to be special, but this is one of those games that none of us will forget anytime soon. Alabama has a very clear path to the Playoff now, but I wouldn’t be shocked if these two see each other again later in the year.
