Deland McCullough explains why this weekends game vs. Miami (OH) means so much

This weekend means more to McCullough

Notre Dame Fighting Irish associate head coach and running backs coach [autotag]Deland McCullough[/autotag] has a special bond with this weekend’s opponent, Miami (OH).

From 1992 to 1995, he suited up for the Redhawks and was a three-time All-MAC player, then after solid NFL career quickly transitioned into coaching. McCullough’s first job was as a high school coach from 2000-2004, but then took some time away.

He’d return to his alma mater as an intern, and a year later worked his way to Indiana as its running backs coach. McCullough would then move to USC, before making the jump to the NFL. He’d help the Kansas City Chiefs win the 2020 Super Bowl.

A return to the college game the next year, back to the Hoosiers for a season before heading to South Bend in 2022. McCullough’s past and current football lives collide this weekend, when the Irish host Miami. This won’t be just any game for him, as he explained to Bennett Wise of WSBT.

The “Cradle of Coaches” has produced a massive coaching tree which includes Notre Dame legend Ara Parseghian. Hopefully, McCullough can join the ranks of successful former Miami coaches.
