The Kentucky Wildcats baseball team played one of their wildest games of the season versus the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday. There were a total of 29 hits and 28 runs crossed the plate in a 15 – 13 Wildcats victory.
Kentucky scored first, but a six run first inning put the Gamecocks in front after one. Then the Wildcats hitters went to work.
Mitchell Daly and Ryan Nicholson hit homeruns in the fourth and tied the game at six. In the fifth, Nicholson his another homer and the Cats scored six more runs, putting them up 12 – 6.
That should have been enough, but South Carolina battled back, plating the next five runs to make it a one run game. Kentucky scored three in the ninth, though, to give them a cushion. They’d need it, too. In the bottom of the ninth, South Carolina rallied one last time, but only managed two runs and came up just short.
Grant Smith went 2-for-5 and drove in four runs for the Cats. Meanwhile Ryan Waldschmidt was on base four times and scored four runs. Nicholson continued to put his power on display with two more homeruns.
The two teams will face off on Sunday in the series finale. It will be played at 3:00 PM ET and can be watched on the SEC Network.
