The Kentucky Wildcats baseball team is looking to have a big year in 2024, and on Friday, the started the season off in style. In a match-up with USC Upstate, the Cats got a win to start the season 1 – 0.
In the first of a three-game series, Kentucky’s offense scored 11 runs, with contributions from several different players. Senior Nick Lopez was the biggest star, as he went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Catcher Devin Burkes had a home run and two RBI.
On the pitching side, the Wildcats gave up seven runs, but the starter, Travis Smith, was solid, giving up just two runs in his four innings. The bullpen gave up five runs, but they were spread out, with USC Upstate never scoring more than two in a single inning.
The series continues on Saturday, and they meet again on Sunday as well. Kentucky has never lost to USC Upstate, and would like to keep it that way after this season-opening series.
