There’s always a lot of debate on who the best teams in college basketball are, but there’s also one thing we’ve learned from watching games this year – no team is safe.
Very few teams can claim they’re the sport’s best team, besides maybe UConn. Purdue is playing much better and like a squad capable of making a deep NCAA Tournament run, while Arizona is rolling through the regular season with ease.
How about North Carolina? The Tar Heels are definitely playing like a National Championship contender, but they’ve also suffered a couple bad losses (Georgia Tech, Clemson).
In the latest Power 36 rankings, a fairly new grouping by college basketball correspondent Andy Katz that rank who he thinks are the sport’s best teams, UNC comes in at fifth.

The top four make sense, with all teams playing their best basketball. All made the Big Dance last year – UConn won it, Marquette advanced to the second round, while Arizona and Purdue – who are guaranteed chokers, both lost in the first round. Arizona became the first 2-seed to lose twice to a 15-seed (Princeton last year), while Purdue became only the second 1-seed to fall to a 16-seed (Fairleigh Dickinson University).
Outside of slip-ups against Georgia Tech and Clemson, the Tar Heels have looked the part of an ACC contender. They largely dominated Duke from opening tip on Saturday, Feb. 3, plus broke out to a large lead in a win against Miami last weekend.
