The NBA world is buzzing after Joel Embiid played for the Philadelphia 76ers in their 119-107 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday.
Embiid returned from a two-game absence caused by left knee soreness, and he appeared to be in obvious pain throughout the night.
Embiid finished with 14 points, seven rebounds and eight turnovers in 30 minutes of playing time. His situation may have worsened toward the end of the game. He and Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga dived for a loose ball, and Kuminga fell on Embiid’s knee, leaving him in obvious pain.
After the game, coach Nick Nurse said the Sixers are waiting on results from an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.
Warriors forward Draymond Green hopped on his podcast to give his thoughts on Embiid playing against Golden State. He cited the 65-game threshold to qualify for the MVP award:
Joel playing tonight felt very much so because of the 65-game limit. What I think is actually quite (expletive) guys have faced those rules before, but those same All-NBA teams, those same MVP awards, lists, Defensive Player of the Year. those lists are all the same. I once lost a Defensive Player of the Year Award to Kawhi Leonard and I think he played 51 games. In turn, you get Joel who comes out there tonight he forces and freak play with him and JK diving for the ball, but maybe it’s not as bad if the knee isn’t already banged up. I don’t really bang with it. Now we got one of our premier faces in his league, the MVP of our league possibly hurt for an extended period of time, because he’s forcing it.

The Sixers now face the possibility of Embiid being out for an extended period. Philadelphia has lost four games in a row and has dropped to fifth in the East as other teams are surging. This is a very unfortunate situation for the Sixers.
