The Oklahoma Sooners are off to a strong start to the 2023-2024 college basketball season. The Sooners sit at 6-0 and with a top-25 win over USC under their belt.
In year three under Porter Moser, the Sooners are hoping to break into the NCAA tournament for the first time since the 2020-2021 season. Oklahoma has been a bubble team each of the last two years, but struggles in Big 12 play have prevented them from making the big dance.
But after their strong start, Joe Lunardi of ESPN projects the Oklahoma Sooners to land in the nine seed in his first Bracketology of the season. Oklahoma would land in the South Regional with a first round matchup against Ohio State. Marquette is the one-seed in the region.
The Sooners are one of 10 Big 12 teams included in Lunardi’s projections to make the tournament. Kansas and Houston are both two seeds while Baylor is a three seed.
The Sooners will have an opportunity to solidify themselves as a tournament team with their tough strength of schedule. However, they’ll have to do better than their 5-13 record in the conference a year ago.
If they can continue to get to the rim like they have in the early part of this season, it will help when they get into some tough conference battles.
The Oklahoma Sooners next take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday at the Lloyd Noble Center.
