Broncos WR Courtland Sutton ranks 2nd in touchdown catches

Only Tyreek Hill (nine) has more touchdown catches than Broncos WR Courtland Sutton (eight) this season.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton scored again in Week 11, catching a game-winning touchdown in style to beat the Minnesota Vikings.

“This guy has been lights out every day,” quarterback Russell Wilson said of Sutton. “His work ethic. His leadership. His dedication to the game. His dedication to getting better every day. He’s one of the best in the game.”

Sutton now has eight touchdown catches in 2023 (a career-high), making him the first Bronco to reach that total in a single season since Julius Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders and the late Demaryius Thomas did so in 2014 with Peyton Manning.

Sutton is also Denver’s first player since Julius Thomas to catch a touchdown pass in five straight games. Going into Week 12, the 28-year-old receiver ranks second in touchdown catches this season, only trailing Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins (nine touchdown catches).

“He’s playing — he’s playing outstanding,” coach Sean Payton said. “He has eight red zone touchdowns now. [He has] strong hands in traffic. There’s obviously a confidence level between he and ‘Russ,’ and then when we start putting plays in and trying to put, maybe, progressions together. But he’s a big target. He’s a great teammate. This guy is something. You guys have covered him a lot longer or known him a lot longer than I have, but he’s doing a really good job for us.”

Now in his sixth season, Sutton has a new career high with a 72.6% catch rate and he’s on pace for 76 receptions, which would also be a new career high.

If he keeps up this pace, Sutton is likely on his way to a Pro Bowl nod. See the list of the NFL’s leaders in touchdown receptions below.
