The Raiders continue to show patience with Tyree Wilson and that is a good thing. Despite his struggles, the Raiders keep putting him out on the field as they want him to learn and grow. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a lot of progression through the first six weeks.
Wilson had the worst performance of his career in Week 6. According to Pro Football Focus, Wilson did not generate a pressure, hurries, or QB hit on 15 pass-rush snaps. He did have one nice run stop on Rhamondre Stevenson, but that was about all he did on Sunday.
According to Pro Football Focus, Wilson finished the game with an overall grade of 33.8. That was the lowest of his career and his overall grade on the season sits at 33.7, second-worst in the NFL. Here is what the site had to say about the first-round pick from Texas Tech in Week 6:
Wilson continues to get rotational reps as the bookend to Maxx Crosby, with little to show for it. He came away empty-handed on 15 pass-rush snaps. His poor overall grade was dragged down by an illegal hands-to-the-face penalty. It’s been a tough year for rookie edge defenders, other than Will Anderson Jr., and Wilson is having the toughest time among the group.
It’s still too early to panic, but the Raiders would be wise to bring in another veteran defensive end. They need someone who can rush the passer opposite of Wilson, who has just four pressures on 101 pass-rush snaps this season.
It’s been a struggle for Wilson this season, but the Raiders are still hopeful that he will eventually figure things out. They need him to start showing signs of improvement sooner rather than later.
