Texas A&M is hitting its groove now, having won eight of the last ten games. The most encouraging thing about the run has been the pitching along that stretch. They rode that momentum into the game against the top-ten-ranked Stanford Cardinals. After falling behind early, the Aggies woke up and scored six runs over the last half of the game to pull away with a 12-7 victory.
After putting one on the board in the first inning, the Aggies pitchers struggled slightly, giving up four runs heading into the fourth. Brett Minnich stopped the leaking with a game-altering double that allowed Austin Bost to score, cutting the deficit to 2-4.
Hunter Haas would be responsible for the subsequent five runs as he hit a double in the sixth, scoring Max Kaufer and Minnich. Then in the eighth, with a tied game, Haas hit another double down the left-field line to bring three more Aggies across the plate for a 7-4 lead.
A&M added one more insurance run in the top of the ninth, extending the lead to 8-4. It wouldn’t be an Aggie game if there weren’t a little drama to close out the game, and the two out-pitching issues the Aggies had earlier in the season made a brief appearance at the end of this one. After retiring the first two batters, Troy Wansing walked a batter after a 12-pitch at-bat, then hit the next batter for two free bases. The next batter hit a single for the Cardinal’s lone inning run, and Coach Schloss brought Matt Dillard to close the game.
He hit the first batter he faced loading the bases and putting the winning run at the plate. Fortunately for the Maroon & White, Dillard induced a pop-up for the final out of the game.
