Bryce Young selected No. 1 overall in the 2023 NFL draft by Carolina Panthers

Bryce Young becomes first Alabama player selected No. 1 overall in the NFL draft

Bryce Young just made Alabama football history. Young became the first Crimson Tide player to be selected No. 1 in the NFL draft.

The Carolina Panthers have had their eyes on the 2021 Heisman Trophy winner for the past month after giving up two first-round picks, two second-round picks and star wide receiver DJ Moore to acquire the top selection from the Chicago Bears.

Typically, when a team drafts first overall it is usually a messy situation, but that’s not necessarily the case for Carolina. The Panthers’ head coach, Frank Reich, has been known for his ability to work with quarterbacks and will absolutely get the most out of Young. Reich was the offensive coordinator for the Eagles when Carson Wentz had an MVP-caliber season as well as working with Andrew Luck as the head coach in Indianapolis.

The Panthers recently brought in multiple talented offensive players for Bryce to work with including Adam Thielen and Miles Sanders.

It is also worth mentioning that the Panthers owner, David Tepper, is the third-richest owner in the league, and he is very eager to make moves to get his team into playoff contention. This is a good landing spot for Bryce. The Panthers will compete for a division title in a weak NFC South (Buccaneers, Falcons and Saints).

Young leaves college as one of the best quarterbacks of the past decade alongside guys like Trevor Lawrence and Joe Burrow. Young started 27 games in his collegiate career going 23-4, but it’s hard to blame any of those four losses on him. In 2023 especially, it felt like Young was the only thing that kept the offensive productive at times.

In his three seasons in college, he threw for 8,356 yards with a completion percentage of 65.8%. He threw 80 touchdowns to only 12 interceptions, as well as seven career-rushing touchdowns. However, his greatest attribute is his brain and how well he understands football.

Congratulation to both Bryce and the Panthers, big things are on the horizon!
