The life and legacy of Lavel Davis Jr. will live on forever in his home state of South Carolina. In a bill brought before the South Carolina General Assembly in February, it was proposed that the 9.6 mile stretch of Highway 78 in Dorchester County be named the “Lavel ‘Tyler’ Norman Davis, Jr. Memorial Highway.”
Davis Jr., a native of Ridgeville, tragically lost his life in the campus shooting at the University of Virginia last November. He was one of three UVA football players killed as a bus returned from a class field trip to Washington, DC. Teammates Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry were the other two lives lost, and a fourth player — Mike Hollins Jr. — was shot in the back and recovered from his injuries.
Now, thanks to this bill and commemorative markers placed along the highway, Davis Jr. will remembered as the bright light that he was in life.
Lavel’s mother, Simone, has informed me that the State of SC has decided to name a highway after Lavel Tyler Norman Davis Jr. near his HS. They will have a dedication ceremony on Saturday, April 29th, 2023 from 12pm – 2pm.
