Tar Heels hurt USC’s bubble hopes with statement win over Virginia

.@TarHeelsWire’s bubble chances improved with huge win over Virginia on Saturday. #UNC needs to win 2 or 3 more games.

The NCAA Tournament bubble buzz isn’t going away for the next couple of weeks before Selection Sunday, and the USC Trojans will be squarely in the conversation.

One team that affected the Trojans’ chances on Saturday is the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Tar Heels got a massive and much-needed victory by defeating No. 6 Virginia, 71-63, in Chapel Hill. This should immensely help the Tar Heels’ chances going forward (h/t Zack Pearson of Tar Heels Wire).

“It was probably the best UNC has looked all season long,” Pearson wrote, “putting together a complete game and it came at the right time. UNC entered this matchup without a Quad 1 win this season and made a statement on their home court against Virginia. That gives them a Quad 1 win heading into the final week of the season with a road date at Florida State on Monday and then hosting Duke on Saturday night.”

However, even with North Carolina’s loss, the Heels are the first team out in the latest bracketology update. Still, this isn’t what USC wanted to happen, and the Arizona State Sun Devils beating Arizona will change the bubble picture even more.

USC can essentially control its own destiny by beating one or both of Arizona State and Arizona this week, heading into the Pac-12 Tournament.
