Chicago Bears targeting an Iowa Hawkeye?

If Chicago makes a move out of No. 1, could Iowa star Lukas Van Ness be a fit with the Bears?

From now until the NFL draft, all eyes will be on the Chicago Bears.

Da Bears have a massive decision on their hands, one that I certainly would not like to be in charge of making. Right now, they hold the first overall pick in their hands. They have a potential game-changer in Alabama‘s Will Anderson or Georgia‘s Jalen Carter in their grasp.

The Bears also have what everybody wants. There will be many suitors for that first overall pick willing to give up a king’s ransom for the opportunity to find the next face of their franchise. Should the Bears go that route, NBC Sports Chicago has identified Iowa defensive lineman Lukas Van Ness as a potential target for the Bears.

Between now and draft day, player evaluations will be fluid as these athletes compete in all-star games, the NFL combine and their prospective pro days. A less known talent like Lukas Van Ness, who never started in college, might be the type of player available for a Bears’ organization possibly owning a bevy of picks. – NBC Sports Chicago.

NBC Sports Chicago really sings the praises of Van Ness, impressed with how he was able to show out despite a lack of starting time for the Hawkeyes. They cite his high productivity compared to his low snap count as cause for excitement, rather than for concern.

Like many in the industry, they are very excited about Van Ness’ athletic potential.

Van Ness is a chiseled, freakishly strong (nickname is Hercules) athlete with favorable length and effective quickness. More of a power edge rusher, Van Ness anchors well at the point of attack, but is able to quickly disengage and pursue either laterally, or in a downhill fashion after quarterbacks and ball carriers. His ability to snap-extend his long arms helps him gain immediate leverage against grappling offensive linemen, or even manipulate athletic blockers with nimble feet. – NBC Sports Chicago.

Van Ness’ play against potential top lineman Peter Skoronski in which he knocks the Northwestern tackle on what they refer to as his “derriere” is just one of many plays that get you excited for the young Iowa prospect.

Chicago needs help everywhere. It’s the reason why they would trade out of the first overall pick despite two very good prospects staring them in the face. They need help in multiple areas. With his high potential, Van Ness could be a potential star in Chicago.
