Sixers’ Doc Rivers sees better Furkan Korkmaz after summer treatment

Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers sees a much better Furkan Korkmaz after his summer treatment.

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Philadelphia 76ers have high expectations for the 2022-23 season after falling in conference semifinals for the fourth time in five seasons. The team went out and acquired some tough-minded players to help push them over the top.

Even with those additions, they will rely on their mainstays to improve.

One of those is Furkan Korkmaz who is coming off a disappointing 2021-22 season during which he shot just 28.9% from deep. That percentage is way down from his previous two seasons, raising questions about what is wrong with his shot.

Korkmaz revealed on media day that he underwent treatment over the summer to fix the nerve damage in his fingers. He said he suffered the damage around the All-Star break, and it affected him through the end of the season.

To begin training camp, coach Doc Rivers sees a much better Korkmaz on the floor.

“He’s fine,” said Rivers. “He’s shooting the ball, he’s more aggressive, and Furk is so good with the ball going downhill, making plays. I think that may be one of his better assets.”

The Sixers hope Korkmaz can get back to the player he was prior to last season. It would give them such a huge boost off the bench knowing he can knock down 3s again at an efficient clip.
