PS5 shipments top more than 17 million despite supply issues

The PS5 is a hit, so much so that you probably can’t buy it.

Finding a PS5 is like spotting Bigfoot at this point, but Sony is working hard to meet demand.

Sony’s 2021 third-quarter earnings report mentions shipping 17.3 million PS5s since the console’s November 2020 launch (Thanks, Gamesindustry.biz). With an astounding 3.9 million units sold during the final quarter of 2021 alone as of Dec. 31, 2021. The company was hoping for more, but  supply chain problems  made that highly unlikely.

Niko Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad  states  that Sony hoped to ship 22.6 million PS5 consoles by March 13, 2022, but it’s expecting 19.3 million now. Thus far, the PS5 hasn’t matched the PS4’s output, as the last-generation machine topped 20.2 million shipments by this point within the same time frame.

PS5 demand remains ridiculous to keep up with, though Sony did make picking one up a smidge easier thanks to  PlayStation Direct. The service gives you an opportunity to get a PS5 straight from Sony, and hopefully, before highly-anticipated titles like Horizon Forbidden West  come out.

Apparently, the supply issues are so bad that  Sony is still making PS4s  to make up for PS5 demand. I can’t imagine many kids these days would want an eight-year-old console, but they’ll have to make do.
