Young Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey has had himself a rough couple of days. It began on Christmas Eve when his house caught on fire while having his family home with him for the holidays in what was a scary moment.
Thankfully, everybody is safe and everybody is good, but that is still a tough moment for Maxey and his family to have to go through. Especially during some downtime in order to be with his loved ones and just relax and breathe a bit.
“That’s devastating,” said Georges Niang. “People have to realize, they may think we have a Superman cape, but in real life, things happen to us. The fact that he had to go through that in a time that you want to enjoy time with your family, especially with his hectic schedule, our hectic schedule, you feel for the kid, you feel for his family.”
Sixers team official just confirmed to me that Tyrese Maxey’s house caught fire. I’m told he and and his family who are in town are okay (which is the important part!), extent of the damage not clear yet.

This is just a reminder that just because somebody is a professional athlete does not mean that they are immune to the challenges that life throws at them from time to time.
“That’s a tough thing,” said coach Doc Rivers. “I, obviously, have gone through it in a different way, but it’s still one of those life lessons that you have to get through. Those are a reminder that as great as NBA players are, there’s still normal stuff that happens to us, too. That’s a reminder.”
Maxey was with the team at shootaround on Sunday morning before their matchup with the Washington Wizards on the road and his teammates continued to express their support for the young man.
“Obviously, I think everybody on the team has reached out and said if you need anything, let us know,” Niang added. “You kind of put your arm around him and tell him everything’s gonna be alright. Life is bigger than basketball. Especially when stuff like that hits home.”
