Kendrick Perkins, Rick Carlisle impressed by Sixers guard Tyrese Maxey

Kendrick Perkins and Rick Carlisle have been impressed with Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey.

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey is definitely a work in progress as the team’s new starting point guard amid the Ben Simmons saga, but he has stepped up to the challenge and he has played some pretty impressive basketball considering his age and the challenge thrown at him.

Over his previous three games, Maxey is averaging 29.3 points and 4.0 assists while shooting 58.6% from the floor and 50% from deep. Those are some impressive numbers when one remembers he is receiving a lot of attention from defenses with Joel Embiid off the floor. The return of Tobias Harris has helped, but Maxey is still putting up big numbers.

His play has caught the eyes of ESPN’s Kendrick Perkins, who recently claimed that Maxey has to be the team’s permanent starting point guard. Perkins might have a serious point even if Simmons does return to play for the Sixers.

Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle is also impressed by what Maxey has done to begin the season. Before the Sixers and the Pacers battled on Saturday in Indy, Carlisle stated Maxey is playing at an All-Star level to begin the season.

Overall, Maxey is averaging 17.6 points and 4.6 assists while shooting 51.9% from the floor and 41.3% from deep. It has been an impressive start for a kid who was thrown into a tough position by circumstances.
