Sacramento Kings rookie Davion Mitchell has had the opportunity to speak with Chris Paul since entering the NBA, and the ninth overall pick shared some of the advice given to him by the future Hall of Famer.
Mitchell and Paul are each represented by agents Richie Beda and Ty Sullivan of CAA Sports. They put Mitchell in touch with Paul shortly after his collegiate season ended at Baylor, and the two have communicated often since then.
The rookie had the opportunity to pick Paul’s brain on a number of topics, including some of his on-court moves. Mitchell explained on Tuesday that Paul also gave him some other advice, according to James Ham of ESPN 1320 in Sacramento.
I think, for me, just talking to him and him giving me advice, telling me, ‘Yeah, you’re a rookie but you can be a leader in your own way.’ He kinda told me that, too. ‘You’re not going to go in and be the most vocal guy but you can lead by example.’ Just talking to him and getting a few pointers from him will help.
Certainly, the advice given to him by Paul will help smooth the transition to the next level. With several veterans on the Kings, Mitchell likely won’t necessarily be needed to be a vocal leader but he has earned his teammates’ respect with his play on the court.
Mitchell has emerged as an excellent defender and has shown that already in just his first week with the Kings. He has been tasked with guarding the likes of Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard and Donovan Mitchell, and has made life tough for them.
He appears to be fitting in well with the Kings so far and could be in store for a big rookie campaign, as a result.
