Throughout its tradition-rich football history, Tennessee has captured monumental victories.
This season, each week, Vols Wire will look at one of Tennessee’s most memorable games against its upcoming opponent.
The Volunteers (1-1) will host Tennessee Tech (0-2) Saturday at Neyland Stadium.
Kickoff is slated for noon EDT and the game will be broadcasted on SEC Network+.
It will be the seventh meeting all time between the two schools. All games in the series have been contested in Knoxville and the Vols have a 6-0 record against Tennessee Tech.
This week’s installment looks back at Tennessee’s 1951 victory over the Golden Eagles. Tennessee defeated the Golden Eagles, 68-0, in one of the Vols’ most lopsided victories in program history.
The Vols, who last played Tennessee Tech in 2016, have won every game by at least 30 points in the series.
In the 1951 contest, Vic Kolenik caught two touchdown passes from Larry Crowson and kicked a pair of extra points.
Herky Payne scored two touchdowns for Tennessee. He was a two-sport athlete for the Vols, playing on UT’s 1951 baseball team that went to the College World Series.
College Football Hall of Famer Hank Lauricella, who was runner-up for the Heisman Trophy following the season, had two carries, including a 76-yard touchdown, and Dick Ernsbeger scored Tennessee’s first touchdown in the game.
The Vols would go on to win the 1951 national championship.
