49ers claim former Ravens RB off waivers

The #49ers added some depth to their backfield with a former Ravens running back.

The 49ers on Wednesday added some running back depth by claiming Trenton Cannon off waivers from the Ravens. With an open roster spot there was no corresponding move required to get him on the roster.

Cannon played in Baltimore’s season-opener and rushed twice for 5 yards in nine offensive snaps. He also recorded a special teams tackle.

The Jets selected Cannon in the sixth round of the 2018 draft. He spent two years in New York and one with Carolina before landing in Baltimore. Cannon has played in 35 games and posted 151 yards and a touchdown on 50 carries. He’s also hauled in 20 receptions for 160 yards.

San Francisco now has four running backs on their roster again after Raheem Mostert was placed on Injured Reserve. While Cannon won’t have a ton of familiarity with the offense, his ability to contribute on special teams may earn him a role early with his new team.
