After dueling it out with rookie quarterback Mac Jones, Cam Newton was cut by the New England Patriots Tuesday morning.
Newton was entering his second year with the Pats. He completed 65% of his passes for 2,657 yards and eight touchdowns. He also added 592 yards and 12 touchdowns on the ground.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions to the former Heisman winner being cut.
With Cam Newton release, Boston sports media and (white) Pats fans are popping champagne bottles. Can hear it from here. https://t.co/totwuNZ80C

Mac Jones starting over Cam makes sense. Brian Hoyer making the team over Cam does not. https://t.co/7P3xkQVJnH

Ex-Patriots QB Cam Newton with a nice message, via his IG story, on his way out of Foxboro. Say this for Newton: Was a very good teammate and fit right into the culture there. pic.twitter.com/oueMYj9ILb

The Patriots have reportedly released Cam Newton.
Mac Jones is expected to join Drew Bledsoe and Jim Plunkett as the only rookies in Patriots franchise history to start in the team’s regular season opener. pic.twitter.com/w5qRcVyd1B

This is really simple, folks. Cam is 32 years old. Mac Jones – a 1st round pick/talent – has looked really good this preseason. I would bet a conversation took place that Mac was going to be the starter and Cam asked for the release, which was granted. End of story. https://t.co/DQY7jOsgoC
