Sixers 2021 NBA mock draft: Quentin Grimes adds more shooting for stars

A new mock draft has the Philadelphia 76ers selecting Houston guard Quentin Grimes.

The 2021 NBA draft is four days away (July 29), and everybody is figuring out what they plan to do. The pre-draft workouts are just about wrapped up, teams have their plans, and now is the time for execution.

The Philadelphia 76ers have two picks, Nos. 28 and 50, and they have options. They can either trade the pick in a package with 25-year-old star Ben Simmons, or they can make the selection and add to the roster.

The Sixers still need shooting and shot creation around Simmons — if they keep him — and Joel Embiid as they move forward. With the 28th pick, there should be a shooter available. ESPN’s latest mock has them selecting Houston guard Quentin Grimes:

The Sixers will be looking to surround their core with as much 3-point shooting as possible after a disappointing playoff exit. Enter Grimes, one of the best shooters in the college game, who showed a lot more versatility as a passer than he had previously gotten credit for in what was an outstanding week of play at the NBA combine. Grimes looks physically ready to help a team after playing a major role taking one of the best defensive teams in college basketball to the NCAA Final Four.

Grimes shot 40.3% for the Cougars in the 2020-21 season and he also averaged 17.8 points and 5.7 rebounds as he figures to be a 3-and-D option for Philadelphia if they were to select him. The Sixers could always use more shooting for their stars to operate on offense and Grimes offers that at 28.
