Pete Alonso came through with a homer seconds after a fan reminded him of the over-under

Pete Alonso’s ninth-inning homer was ultimately meaningless … but not for some.

Tuesday’s Mets-Phillies game was pretty much decided by the time Pete Alonso came up to bat with two outs in the top of the ninth. New York led 6-2 and had a win probability of 98.9%, according to ESPN.

But, for some fans, there was still plenty hanging in the balance.

The over-under for the game was 9 and with only four outs remaining and only eight runs on the scoreboard, over bettors were obviously getting nervous. There was at least one of those bettors in the stands at Citizens Bank Park and he made sure to let Alonso know he needed his help.

The Mets first baseman immediately came through in the “clutch”…

The meaningless homer moved the Mets’ win probability by a single percentage point, but it was a monumental play for the betting community. Alonso was a hero for some and a villain to others.

And if that wasn’t enough, Alonso followed his up dinger with a throwing error that allowed the Phillies to tack on another run to the total in the bottom of the ninth. Either way, Alonso was going to make sure the over bettors were happy. What a guy.

The Mets went on to win 8-4 and moved to 1-1 on the season. The homer and two RBI were Alonso’s first of the season.
