The week after the end of an NFL season is most commonly used for reflection. Reflection on what went right, what went wrong and what needs to change. For the Miami Dolphins, we’re seeing a little bit of everything this week — a change at offensive coordinator, a commitment to a young quarterback and also some recognition for those who did their best to anchor the Dolphins on their way to a 10-6 season.
The Dolphins announced their team award winners yesterday, spotlighting a number of the leaders on this Dolphins team for their valiant efforts on and off the field in 2020.

Most Valuable Player – Xavien Howard
Howard is the first NFL defender to log 10 or more interceptions in a single season in over a decade. He’s built a significant case to be named the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2020 and his presence helped form the identity of the Dolphins’ defense: a stout secondary that pressured opposing quarterbacks into backbreaking mistakes.
Leadership Award – Ryan Fitzpatrick
Fitzpatrick, a 16-year NFL veteran, handled Miami’s quarterback transition with class and proved himself to be a consummate professional with his mentorship of Tua Tagovailoa. And, when the Dolphins needed him, Fitzpatrick was ready to play in a spot start late in the season and he helped deliver a miracle win over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Courage Award – Bobby McCain
McCain returned to the Dolphins lineup after missing half of 2019 with an injury. McCain, who also completed his first full season as the Dolphins’ starting free safety after transitioning there ahead of the 2019 campaign, delivered strong play for the Dolphins and alleviated concerns about Miami’s need for a post safety for the future.
Community Service Award – Byron Jones, Christian Wilkins, Patrick Laird, Kyle Van Noy, Elandon Roberts
The Dolphins’ Social Impact committee takes this year’s award. The work of these Miami Dolphins held a big impact off the field and Byron Jones specifically was so involved that he was recognized as Miami’s Walter Payton Man of the Year award nominee.
