Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith is the first wide receiver to win the Heisman Trophy since Desmond Howard in 1991

For the first time since 1991, a wide receiver has won the Heisman Trophy.

Alabama’s DeVonta Smith became the first pass-catcher to win the award since Desmond Howard, beating out his teammate and quarterback Mac Jones, as well as Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Florida quarterback Kyle Trask.

Smith’s incredible 2020 campaign, which will conclude in the national title game against Ohio State later this week, featured astronomical production for the undefeated Crimson Tide. Smith currently sits at 105 receptions for 1,641 yards and 20 touchdowns through the air.

Widely regarded as one of the top prospects in the 2021 NFL draft class, Smith is destined to be a top-10 pick.
